These measurements are doing my head in!!!

What is the size of the rim on a stock FTO if the tyre size is 205/50R16?

I'm about to purchase a set of rims 17x8 and I don't know how to convert the sizes. I can't figure out which are bigger!!!

I know the 17s are bigger than the 16s obviously but I can't figure out the size of the stock rims. I only know the tyre size.........any help?

Thanks Kev now that I've read that, I've actually put a deposit on the 17x8 Enkei EVO 8 Rims I found on this forum. What do you think? Will it fit?

They'll fit - and they are hot (not stolen, good looking ) rims. I almost bought them myself.

Ok the good thing is that there are photos to backup that they fit. Now I've never changed rims before in my life....hence the stock 97 rims which still look pretty good when kept clean.

Any advice on what size TYRE to use and what OFFSET. Kev I read the bit about offset and it was all gibberish to me unfortunately. I'm still not clear on the dimensions and which axis I'm looking at when they say the EVO VIII rims are 17 x 8. Any help?

Your offset is governed by the rims - your offset is already chosen for you with those rims. I like to break it down as 'how far the wheel sticks out or doesnt stick out from under the panel of the car.'

I cant remember the stock tyre size off the top of my head, but someone here would be able to. I think you'll be looking for a 215, 50 R17 or a 225 45 R17 tyre. The 200 number is the tyre width, the 40-50 number is the tyre wall height. They are in ratio to each other.

Here's a list of the offsets that should fit:

Width 6.5
Offset +20 to +50 (std +38)
Width 7.0
Offset +25 to +45
Width 7.5
Offset +30 to +39
Width 8.0
Offset +35

One qu though. I've heard that if you fit 17x8s on stock suspension you will have problems with them fouling the stock suspension. Is this definitely the case?

Yeah you can fit a number of different size tyre to the one size rim. All depends on how much room you have under the gaurd. For instance, if you threw those rims of yours onto a 4 wheel drive, you could fit a much larger tyre in both width & wall height.

As Kid Dynamite rightly mentions, 17 x 8 is as big a rim (width-wise) that you could get into an FTO without gaurd mods. Hence I suggested the 2 tyre sizes. I seem to recall that a 225 on a 8 inch rim may rub on the underside of the front strut or the inside of the wheel arch - especially under load during cornering & on full lock. When playing with sizes in the past I have bought (or borrowed) a tyre of each size (worn) from the shop & tested to see.

Well I've always had the stock 205/50R16 on my FTO so if I wanted to keep the same height without lowering the car then I would be looking for something in the 45 or 40 series profile tyres?

I also got top mix sideskirts which stick out a little bit further than the stock sideskirts. Hopefully the tyre won't rub on that and rip the whole thing off!

I have looked at so many sites and asked heaps of tyre companies and they said the tyre simply doesn't exist here in this country.

Is that true?

I did find a Yokohama tyre that is 225/40R16.......will this fit?

it is correct that 225/40R17 size does not exist
What you need for 17X8 rims is 215/45ZR17
This is a match within %1 of the factory requirements, otherwise your spedo will not be accurate.

That's what the tyre people told me. They've got to update the tyre spec section on this website! Anyway do you think there with would be tyre rubbing with the 45 series profile as suppose to the 40 series profile?

I have the same setup that I mentioned above.
17X8 rims 215/45ZR17 GoodYear Eagle F1 GSD3
No rubbing at all, it actually clears better then stock rims

I have the same : 17X8 rims 215/45ZR17 ... mines also been lowered also...
