man g/box rattle

hey people.
following on from the 'engine rattle' thread where i said
"nah the clutch feels fine. no clicks or noises or anything.
it (g/box) rattles when i accelerate up to 1800rpm (in any gear) then stops.
also rattles at idle occasionally, but stops when i push the clutch in.
has to be something to do with the man trans...."
I took my car to a mech yesterday to check it out and he thinks its possibly a brocken snap ring or something in the gearbox, causing the gears to rattle when placed under load. Could cost quite a bit to fix.
Anyone heard of this before, got any comments, suggestions.
