FTO vs Calibra vs Celica

Hi guys, i've always loved the FTO shape. I currently own a BMW 318is and im in a threeway split between buying an FTO (GPX), Holden Calibra or Toyota Celica (95+)

Since you guys are the experts in FTO's, could you point me in the right direction towards the tecnical specs of the FTO, and some personal opinions of your cars. I'm looking at possibly getting a GPX tiptronic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

My opinion, stay clear of the Calibra, Celica is good if you're looking for cheap parts etc. but not exactly a grunty car.
So you've only got one choice

What about other cars in the price range like a Series1 S14, 180sx, R32/33 Skyline, etc. easy to find parts and plenty of aftermarket support as well.

Anyway, you'll probably know what most people on this forum are going to tell you right? It's an FTO forum after all!

If the Holden Calibra is anything like the uk's Vauxhal Calibra then........   pmsl!!!

The Celica is typical bombproof Toyota engineering but the FTO is a faster more nimble car (That's if you're talking the st202 celica)

Don't buy the Vectra as it's not really anything other than a people mover.

Only buy the Celica if it's a GT4.

Buy the FTO

In all seriousness though, the FTO will impress you, and others around you the most.

Having driven the Calibra & the Celica (95+), I have to say the Aussie spec are a real dissapointment, i know the euro & U.S spec gets a different engine & drive tran for the Calibra

95 FTO
2.0L V6 MIVEC (GPX)
150kw
200nm
1210kg

95 Celica
2.2L 4cycl
96kw
140nm
1170kg

94 Calibra (Aussie spec)
2.5L V6
125Kw
227Nm
1245kg

Hmm..

Calibra, well its not a bad car but the exterior and the interior are outdated when compared to an FTO, the ONLY reason why i would choose a calibra over an fto is because there are more aftermarket parts for it, and secondly because it is much easier to turbo then an fto...

I think you better ask the same question on the celica & calibra forums LOL, cos everyone will be biased.

Also don't forget the early Integra DC2R, they are a nice car, FTO's rival.

If you look at the there is only one N/A in the FTO's class that beats the FTO and that's the Type-R's..

Can you tell us what you actully want to car for? like to pimp it up, to make it a race car, for drags? or for cornering?

Oh, and also, i guarantee you the insurance will be higher on the FTO then on the celica and the calibra!

Where to go

ya the celica (bar the GT4 version) are slow as....and they are roughly the same price as a good condition FTO. also you'll notice the difference bettwen the FTO and your 318 (depending on what year) but I used to have 318 which was nice to drive but heavy and slow...

FTO is the way to GO!

Gah, see this is what happens when I try to post while at work! :P

Boris hit the nail on the head.......what are you looking for in a car? What plans do you have for whatever car you buy?

I just want the car for my everyday runaround car.. but, i do like having a nice looking car, which is also fuel efficient, and has some ballz in its stock form. i don't really care to much for dragging people, or doing it up really, due to being past that stage in my life.

IVECII (Mit's tip box) had won an award for their innovation & performance. They are exactly the same as the one u find in today's Lancer & Magna, consider they are more 10yrs old technology, they are still one of the best tip around. :D

I agree with Kev, really really good boxes.

But my God, don't EVER break them. 8O

I'm making the assumption that you bought your BMW to be recognised coz if you wanted a reliable car you would have just bought a camry or some sh*t like that.

In practically every review I've read about the FTO the main thing mentioned is the shape and it never fails to turn heads......even mine. Even after I've had the car for 4 years and FTO's are a little more common on the road now every second person still looks at your car while you're driving.

how often do you guys change the timing belt on the FTO? According to the Calibra forum, those guys recommend every 60.000kms or thereabouts.. also, ive been hearing the calbira is prone to snapping timing belts.

whats the reliability of the FTO like?

Depends on how well the previous owner of the vehicle has looked after it.

It is recommended to change timing belt every 100,000km & like Pete said reliability is really depends on the previous owner, but in general FTO are pretty reliable.
