Importing from NZ?

How is it so cheap? What is the catch?
Was looking at other NZ sites, evo 4 for $16,000?
Has anyone imported from NZ? Does it end up expensive?

But for you guys it's not so easy. I believe you have to have owned the car and lived in NZ for 12 months before you are allowed to import them to Aus. There are a whole heap of rules which I'm sure have been covered here before.
I know people over here have moved to Australia and contemplated taking their cars with them, but it usually works out to be too much hassle. Having said that, I know at least a couple who have done it.

It just seems too good to be true some of the prices.
GTO's for $13k there!? They sell them here for $50k?
I'm not really prepared to move out of Aus for 12 months though.
Couldn't someone from here buy it, then someone NZ resident register it, import it over, then person here registers in own name?

GTO is around $15-23k here for the same early 90's you saw in NZ. I saw two was sold for $13k last mth, fresh from the boat.

I'm sure I seen GTO before for sale for $50k....1997 model.

Depends what model. The pre-facelifts are cheap as chips over here - around $10-12k for a turbo model. The post facelifts are a bit more expensive - up around $20k for some. There is a model called the MR which is still pretty expensive - I've seen some asking $35k over here.
But in general cars are very cheap over here compared to what you guys are probably used to - the joys of not having a local car industry to protect

Yep all correct. Only two ways you can import an FTO currently:
- personal import (if you've owned the vehicle abroad for at least 12 months)
- race/rally import (need CAMS licence - C3/R3 minimum). If you import under race rally you will not be able to road register the vehicle.

And it's this reason I hate local car manufacturers.
They should learn to develop and market a superior car, instead of us looking overseas for a better alternative.

good luck getting a compliance plate and blue slip.... and if ya do then it will work out to cost you the same as buying it here

Dont hate the manufacturers here - hate the fact that a factory worker in Asia gets a bowl of rice for his weeks work. Here they get 20 bucks an hour, plus site allowance, plus tool user allowance, plus union benfits, plus sheetmetal workers picnic, plus danger money, plus, plus, plus, plus a nation that was under rule of a labour government for 20 years prior to little Johnny.

I suppose my beef isn't with the workers or the price but rather the marketing and design of their vehicles.
Australian car manufacturers seem to think that all Aussies want a nice big Falcon/Commodore with that heavy V8 grumble and four doors. Thus they only design and produce such vehicles.
This means that those of us who want something different are forced to look elsewhere.
On another note....would a car imported for pure race reasons (using a CAMS licensce) be cheaper, not including associated costs such as a trailer, than buying a road worthy car and then turning it into a race vehicle?
