Hey i changed my rear lifters on my gr, i left my old oil in it was Magnatec, rear lifters ran great no noise, but teh front still tap a tad during cold startups.

Left weekend i changed the fronts and changed to Motul Turbolite? 10W-40 hoping for no ticks, but sometimes when i start it i get a sligth tick from 1 lifter!

Is this a problem with the oil?? Or maybe that 1 lifter is screwed? Ive only done about 50kms on it as well though.

Ahhh lifters...
Q: Does that one tick go away once warm?
I still have one tick for 2 or 3 seconds every now & then during cold start & all my lifters have been done. Apparently a badly damaged / worn lifter can actually damage the hole that it lives in, in the head - even after its been replaced the damage has been done, the new lifter can smack around in that damaged hole - especially if the wear has effected the oil gallery entering the hole. It can be repaired, but it necessitates removing the head & 'sleeving' the hole, reboring it & then re-drilling the oil hole. If the tick isn't too annoying & goes away after a while, I wouldn't worry about it. If its bad then get it fixed... if its multiple tappets making the noise.. .consider a new / reco head.

Alternatively, if you can pin point the offending lifter - it may well be as simple as a blocked oil gallery. There is a 2mm hole into each lifter seat & it may be full of crap.

Hope that helps

thing is the car was less noisy before i changed the fronts, and left in the magnetec. So im guessing i got a dodgy lifter, havent put on enough kms, or the oil i got is crap,

What oil you using? Motul is great from what I've heard, people say mobil 1 is great but i remember back in the past i use it and it made my lifters sound like crap.

I run on Penrite semi synth 10-40W. I had to run the motor for a good 1 hour before the intial racket quitened down, the a couple of days before they bed in properly. I've used a heavier grade of oil & it does shut them up a bit.

Do you guys get an oil additive called ProMa MLB8 over there? It's used by Mitsubishi NZ workshops to quieten lifters and can work quite well. I used to use it in my 6A12 powered VR-4 and it would quieten them down nicely ... for about 5000kms, which was when I knew it was time for another oil change. But it has different effects on different cars...

Cant say we do.. who manufactures it? I tried to search for it but didn't get too far... possibly because of Friday night beer consumption :P
