Jumping Rev's on Tacho

Hi guys just got a problem driving back to my office with my tacho. All was good untill doing about 120 along the M4 suddenly tacho starts going nuts jumping all over the shop like a mexican jumping bean.
Then all of a sudden just sits on zero and didn't move so I pulled off the expressway and drove the long way to see if there was any other problems. There was none from what I could tell gear changes are all good and car seems to be running fine.Just the dodgy needle. I'm hoping that it's just the connection behind the dash.
I was wondering if any one else has had this problem and if it could be anything else maybe another cable somewhere. Doesn't seem to be a problem at the momment engine wise just annoying when driving in tippy mode.
Any help would be tops before I start pulling the dash appart or looking for the controler under the engine.
Thanks guys
