My fuel guage doesnt go to E when I turn off the engine and pull out the key.

It's not supposed to

hmm usually mine does but lately it just stays in the same position.

Does anyone else's fuel guage go to E? or do they stay in the same position?

check the voltage regulator for the fuel sender (i think it's located on the back of the instrument cluster) - you'll need a multimeter, a phillips screwdriver and a little patience

It's a common mitsubishi fault, the regulators burn out and you get wonky fuel readings. If you can do it yourself, a regulator costs about $4 from dick smith or jaycar.

otherwise check with your friendly neighborhood auto electrician.

This will also be the fault if:
- your fuel gague only ever seems to read up to 1/2 way
- your gauge has '"sudden drops" usually from 1/2 to empty in 50k (and you're not using MIVEC flat out )

My fuel guage measures the fuel ok but when I turn off the engine and take out the key the guage doesnt go to E. Usually my guage goes to E but now it just stays in the same position

they go to E when the regulator's broken - the regulator is attatched to the parmanent 12V (unswitched) supply - what's probably happened if your gauge used to go to E and now stays where it is - you've probably just got a dry joint or a loose wire in the fuel sender harness - nothing to worry about until your fuel gauge stops working

(I should have been more clear in my oringinal post - the mitsi fuel gauges always show how much fuel you have - the regulator's always working, which is why they develop problems)

I think i should make my question more clear. For example say my fuel guage needle is at full, when i turn off my engine the needle goes to straight to E. This is normal for my car until now.

Now when the needle is at full n i turn off my engine, the needle stays at full it doesnt go back to E like it usually did.

It works exponentially though. Like i'll get 120km to the first 1/4, then only about 150km to the remaining 3/4 of the gauge. I think it's rooted

I realised that when my indicator exactly shows 1/4 of a full tank, its actualy 1/2 full. If I fill at that point, I only can put 30lts into the tank.
Mine also shows the petrol level all the times, never goes down to E when the ignition is off.

I get 80km for the first 1/4, then 100km for the remaining 3/4. Hmm i think my car is running inefficiently. I can only go around 430km on a full tank but before i cleaned my injectors i could only manage 300km. Anybody have any suggestions?

my fuel gauge seems to be acurate and does this...
i get either 52l for 470kms ir 520kms for 48l depending on my driving mood (amazing how much you dont use if you only grind up to 3k)

bit more injector cleaner perhaps.

I cant even reach 500km... I 've cleaned my injectors 3 times now, I think its pretty much clean. I did see an improvement the first time i cleaned it but still not enough. I want to be able to get at least 500km from a full tank. btw everytime I drive I rev under 3k rpm.
