FTO AUSTRALIA

Hey, ever since i've had my FTO theres been a sort of high pitched whining sound from somewhere outside whenever i hit speeds in excess of 60. If I take my foot off the accelerater and just coast along the sound goes away. At first it sounded as though it was coming from the front tires, I recently had one of my mates in the backseat and he said "what the hell is that sound? i think it's coming from your differential".

Any ideas on what this sound is??

The other one is like an intermittent gas discharge that can be heard at the drivers side rear, about where the fuel tank is, but low to the ground near the exhaust.

Nothings leaking.

I have no clue whats causing either of these two sounds. The second one cannot be heard from inside the cabin.

Oh and theres another one. Randomly i'll get this really rapid and tinny, but soft, sort of vibrating noise. It's like the tappets but much much faster and a lot quiter. It happens irrespective of gear or speed, and not very often, it lasts at most a second. It's definetly not the tappets because it sounds different, and all of my tappet noise (bar about 1/2 second on startup) has dissapeared since i changed the oil.

No idea as to the first sound, but the second one is your fuel pump.

It's a strange sound, hard to discribe. Kind of between a low speed motor and a gaseous sound.

Third sound no idea

The first sound isnt a belt is it. Does it scream at high revs or just high speed?
Or it may be your radiator fan?

Would that be a normal fuel pump sound or one which means i'm going to have to spend money?

It's not a belt or fan sound, definetly sounds really close to the ground or somehow related to the wheels. Not sure if it means anything but the front and rear wheel size difference is about 5cm in diametre. At first i thought the sound was coming from the front wheels. The sound only happens at speed, it isn't related to revs but if i start slowing down (take foot off accelerater or go up a hill) the sound stops.

I'll check my power steering fluid in about 30 minutes.

I may have an idea what the third sound is. Could it be the bonnet holder upperer bar. It actually knocks against the underside of the bonnet, mine rattles for a couple of seconds every now and again. Just stick a piece of rubber on the underside of the bonnet where the bar is and see if that fixes it.....

Already tackled the support arm thing a while ago Old shoelaces and superglue. Hahaha, it works though, nice and cushioned.

edit: just checked the power steering fluid, appears to be at the max stroke on the dipstick (checked a couple of times) it's a red dirt colour, very thin

1st one sounds to me like a warped brake disc to me. I had the same problem. The noise was constant (and annoying) and would dissapear as soon as I applied any pressure on the brake pedal. After getting the discs machined (and getting RB74 pads fitted ) the problem hasn't returned.

first problem can be able ot things, tyres, bearings, belts, etc.

second problem definately is the Fuel pump, its obvious.

there was never mentioned of brakes being depressed. Also fuel pump noise is normal.
