miss firing

need a hand if anyone knows anything about this... :(

i start the car cold, with the key, and the air con off, the car revs initially past 1k then drops, holds for a moment at 500, then stalls. i start the car again, this time using the throttle to boost the revs up to ~2/3k enough to get it out of the idle circuit and it miss fires like its only firing on about 2 cylinders (sorta like how a top fuel dragster sounds when idling), the more revs the less miss firing it seems... like more pressure reduces the miss firing.

the car seems fine when fully warmed, and at around 7 or 8k when the engine is going for it on full throttle, it feels like theres a 3rd cam kicking in because theres an extra big kick up the ass in power just before redline.

at this point i (and a quick google search) am thinking the fuel filter is just clogged..

so i had a look under the bonnet but cant find it for the life of me.. so after 20mins and a change of torch batteries i gave up... i thought it'd just be on the firewall somewhere in a bright plastic case, but apparently not.. or im blind.. or i dont have one :?

help!

hey SG,

The fuel filter is behind the engine and in front of the firewall. more to the passenger side of the car.
The OEM filters are black, and you will require two spanners to undo it.

check yr spark plugs. I had a miss fire because my spark plugs were cactus :(
make sure you check the front 3 and the hard to get to back 3.

dont think its the spark plugs becuase it seems to missfire less when its revved more..

jono, is it on the firewall itself? the closest thing i found is a silver canister with what looks like a fuel line running in/out of it

yeah.. it should be mounted to the firewall from memory. it could be metalic.. but most ive seen are black.

u should still check yr spark plugs because mine miss fired less as i revved it more as well.

Its a cheaper fix if it was the spark plugs than the stepper motor.

isnt the stepper motor only a problem when the air con is on?

its a tough thing to get out this fuel filter :?

ok well i eventually got it out.. but then i couldnt take the thing apart for the life of me, to see what the cloggage might have been.. so i shook it violently and put the thing back in. :x

no change

tomorow im going to repco to see if they stock filters for ftos :?

lol

i just went to repco then and i had to stay fto about 3 times, then he finally said 'what the hell is an fto', but then one guy overheard and knew what one was

unfortunatly they dont make aftermarket fuel filters for em though :( looks like i'll have to get a genuine one. unless anyone knows where to get cheaper ones from?

ok well i got an rac guy to come around cos i locked the keys in the boot, but while he was there i asked him about the miss-firing and he says hes sure its to do with the plugs or the leads... this is because of the linguring fuel smell when it runs: fuel goes into the cylinders, doesnt get burnt, and goes out the exhaust...
