Drove down to the shops before to buy another PS2 game and came out and started up and to my dismay there was a horrible vibration and groaning noise coming from somewhere.
After much tire kicking and speculation I crawled home and discovered the voltmeter was pointing close to 8 volts. My multimeter gave a more accurate reading of 10volts. Bye bye alternator. Reason for subject title is the whole thing smells like yummy lollies after a few minutes of running.
The pulley is definatly turning but I am guessing a bearing or something is cactus.
Time will tell.

The plot thickens. After getting home I put the battery on charge so I can have a full quota of electrical power to cruise down to an auto electrician. I then went about a strict regime of video gaming and pepsi max drinking and about 8 hours later went to check the cars vitals.
I walk in to discover that the battery charger is clicking on and off at regular intervals (it's not meant to do that at any time afaik) and the reading on my multimeter is down to around 6 volts arghhhh.
Any ideas on what going on here?

Hooked everything back up today for a test and what do you know I had a good charge all of a sudden. But candy smell and noise were still there.
After 5 minutes I touched to alt and it was very very very hot. Might be a short somewhere hey?
Now to work out my own way of getting it out. I think I'll go in from underneath.

its a pain in the ass but it can be done... it is mounted on a bit of metal that is connected to the block... youll have to take that mount off... and then i think it comes out of the wheel well....

For anyone that needs to do this themselves, I have posted a brief and simple DIY here.

there is a company in sydney (A class) search old posts for their details... that have exchange alternator units...
they've done a heap of them now for FTO's and definately know what they're doing...
track them down and give them a call...
