FTO AUSTRALIA

I am about to buy an FTO but need to know the size of the back shelf. I know this can be removed and need to know what size of a gap would be left. I would be greatful for any advise you could give on this.

You can remove the parcel shelf but there is still metal plate underneath it between the rear cabin and the boot.

Thats bad, I thought you could get into the boot from there.

I am a family man with a dog that needs taken around in the boot with us. I really would need to get another hatchback car but I am a really big fan of the FTO and needed to remove the shelf so my dog could go in the boot. Its just a pitty.

Unfortunately thats not an option for me. I will have my daughter in the backseat. But thanks for tryin. Any other ideas for me? What size is the shelf. Could I just take a grinder to it and cut it off or is there anything else I could try.

You could, but you might like to check your local regulations regarding stuff like that beforehand. I don't know about Aus, but over here it's illegal to modify the structural parts of the parcel tray as its seen as reducing the structural integrity of the car. You aren't even allowed to cut 6x9 holes any more. Lucky FTOs come with then already.

Could you modify your rear seat in some way so that half of it folds down or is removable? I guess there's probably laws about that too...

It sounds like you haven't personally sat in an FTO, correct me if i'm wrong. Just a note, you say your a family man, so i'm just warning you what the FTO is really a 2+2 car, not a 4 person car. I personally hate having more than 3 people in it. The back is extremely small.

I don't even let my dog in my car, because her nails scratch. I don't know about putting dogs in boots, aren't they meant to have harnesses for when they travel? hmm.

I think if your looking for a practable car then FTO is not a choice... but would you sacrifice practability over look & performace?

I spent a long time upside down in the boot working out where to fit my 4-point harness! I wouldn't want to put a dog in there, and it couldn't climb through such a gap even if there was one.

No, you can't chop the shelf out. It's part of the structural strength of the car.

You could, however, buy a spare rear upper seat bit, and chop a chunk of that out. It's just super-light foam and material, no springs or anything. Seat on one side, doggie door on the other.
