Well, my gear box has been assessed and man, am i gonna be poor

Anyway, looks like the components needed are
2nd gear syncro
3rd gear syncro
reverse gear(apparently worn)
and some bearing(dunno which one)


now, apparently mitsu australia dont even stock/sell any of the parts for an fto gear box....
so, i need direction on where i can possibly source these parts from???

any ideas would be great....

If you get really desperate, Mitsubishi NZ over here can probably get them for you. Just might be a bit expensive for freight...

buy a second hand gearbox... with warranty ... chuck it in and take your time reconditioning this one... a lot of time...

My tip box rebuild cost me $3.3k.

But to say it's smoother than a baby's butt is an understatement!!


Quick question bout the tips though.......is it alright to down shift from 3rd-2nd often? Or should it be something I only do everynow and then??

Silentbob, I recommend that you first let your fingers do the walking. Grab the Yellow Pages and ring all the import wreckers you can find, even if they are interstate.

If that fails, I would go with what Afterburner said and call Mitsu in NZ. The freight might be expensive, but the prices of FTO spare parts in general is much cheaper than from Aus Mitsu.

my transmission rebuilf took 2 weeks and costed me 1.8k and to put back in the car (incl taking the trans out) cost 700 labor

do wreckers sell individual components, or are you infering buying a 2nd hand box?

im more inclined, if not rediculously wallet shattering, to repair the current one, because then ill know its condition 100%


do either of you know where the parts were sourced from for your repairs?(i assume syncro's were replaced at least?)

Sorry SilentBob, but I have no idea where they sourced the parts from. They gave me 2 options when I brought the car in: recondition my own gearbox or install a 2nd hand one. I went with reconditioning my own for the same reason that you're thinking. It would be in 100% condition and at least I would have a 12 month warranty on it. Whereas the 2nd hand one could go any time. It cost me more money, but well worth the peace of mind.

Getting a 2nd hand one installed is the quicker option if you want your car back on the road asap.

well i got a quote today for parts sourced for mitsu australia...
2k to get it all up and running...

and in case you wondered, the parts needed are

all seals and bearings, including diff bearing
2nd gear syncro
3rd gear syncro
spring washer thingies that put pressure on syncro's
reverse gear on pinion shaft
reverse gear on selector hub

1600 bucks worth of parts from mitsu australia apparently...

wonderin if NZ or Jap would be a cheaper source...

2k sounds about right. Mine cost $2500, but warranty covered 1.25k of it

You might be able to source cheaper parts from overseas, but getting parts from Japan will take ages. Give Mitsubishi in NZ a ring on 00116442372408. You'll probably have to quote them part numbers just to make sure they don't send you the wrong thing.

does anyone know if any of those parts are shared with manual gearboxes in aust sold mitsu cars ? cause that'd make it sooooo much cheaper !

I know that Just Jap Auto has quite a few FTO parts.. I got my Tip gear stick from them second hand for $90 and it looks as new as my old one and works better.

By the way, KAI is selling a new Tip Gearbox in the Parts for Sale forum for $750. U can go check that if you want a new one.

Mitsubishi Australia do stock the parts, because thats where i got all the parts when I had my box rebuilt. But depending on stock levels, some parts may need to be ordered from Japan.

I got all new synchros, rings, seal and bearings. Mine came to $850 parts plus labour. They won't tell you this, but with unusual parts like these that are out of stock, they have a habit of charging a premium for getting them from Japan ... perhaps thats why the 2k. I only found out when I asked why 1 bearing that I had to wait for was 3x the other bearing. Thats when I got angry and made them reduce the price.

Might even pay to do a group order, as the synchro thread sounds like lots of people need parts.

well i think the reason mine is up there in price is due to the replacing of my reverse gear(on both selector and pinion shafts) which going by the pricing i got from NZ equates to a rather hefty portion(more than 1/3rd) so your $850 looks about right
considering syncro's etc $850, reverse gears are around $500ish plus the 400ish labour is puttin me up to the 2k price range...

all the parts are in stock, with the worst case being 2 days from Adelaide Mitsu...

but anyway, the parts are on their way now and hopefully a working gearbox shall be mine come the weekend *fingers crossed*

PS it would have been slightly cheaper to order the parts from NZ(for future reference, but unfortunatly a few of the major parts were out of stock, meaning ex Japan = 3wk wait, which i couldnt be f'd with for a saving equating to prolly around $200)
