Great News! Timing Belts.

Hi there guys, i know that many of you are looking around for the best prices on timing belts etc... and most people are stuck with having to order to MMC (oem) timing belt from Mitsubishi for around $300.

I spoke to SilentBob a while back with regard to ordering the Gates timing belt from Kempy's in NZ. They were qouting around $220 for just the belt itself (which is altogether better than MMC).

But i also just found out that all they do is to order to belt directly from Gates Australia. I just got right of the phone to gates, and i have just recieved a qoute of $147 for the belt! with a 1 day shipment over here.

BTW, this is for the GPX, (Atleast the GR's have more aftermarket producers).

So why the hell are we ordering from NZ when it is coming right from Australia?!!!

By the way guys, i've got a mate of mine which is going to do the whole thing for really cheap (100000k service), i'll get back to you on the price of the final deal (although it wont be AS cheap for others, but will def be a lot cheaper than other places). Let's also hope that he does a good job? 8O

Anyways, i will get back to you once i found out about the whole process  .

Good job Cohn! :D
Thanks for doing this research. I'm sure we'll all reap the rewards.
Would you happen to know if Gates also stock the fan belts and the hydraulic tensioner thingamajig that everyone is talking about?

hehe....nice huntin :)

Just so anyone knows, a timing belt from Mitsubishi NZ, plus Hydraulic Tensioner(which is usually advised to be replaced at the same time, and isnt cheap being almost as much as the belt, eg genuine belt is $200NZ, genuine tensioner is $165NZ) is exactly $438.75NZ for GENUINE PARTS...which equates to about $370ish AUS...

If anyone is after them contact :
Derek Henton dhenton@mitsubishi-motors.co.nz
Used Parts Specialist, Mitsubishi NZ
(04) 237 2408(remember to use internation dialing codes etc)
Part numbers are(for a GPX)
Cambelt - MD211195
Tensioner - MD308593

So if you want to use after market, go with Cohn's idea...if you want to use genuine then go with Mitsubishi NZ

What's wrong with ordering the genuine MMC parts from within Australia? Why is everyone ordering them from NZ?

price of belt from Mitsubishi Northshore(Sydney) - $350AUS
price of belt from Mitsubishi NZ - about $250ish NZ(about $200AUS)

thats why :)

I think due to NZ having the FTO imported by Mitsu for a couple of years helps in the pricing of their spare parts

Well, I'm gonna call Mitsubishi in Melbourne and find out how much they charge. Maybe they charge less :?

I'll let you guys know when I find out.

Rxboy, I haven't really looked into the hydraulic tensioner, although i should (apparently most times it breaks lose while replacing the belt). But the good thing about that is that it is the same as the Galant V6 engine, so i would not worry about the tensioner being crazily overpriced due to imports etc...

becarefull with aftermarket timing belts.

I was told by Malcom Crockenberg who works on all the rally cars that they dont last as long and have been known to let go, during rallys.

So for the extra few bucks i would use genuine.

Dannyboy...

Might be true, however, i am not using my car for rally use.

Original parts are DOUBLE the price, in this case it isn't really just a few bob more.

Only intend to have the car for max of 50000k's more, i can't see a brand new belt (regardless of brand, its a piece of rubber) letting go before then :o .

im with paladin - some things I wouldnt look for a cheaper option on... your cost is the labour more then anything, but then at least its guaranteed for another 80-100 kms
