I noticed today a woman talking on her mobile in her car while parked right next to a bowser 8O

What is the likelyhood of something going bang?

Never heard before that it is possible to light up a fire from invisable waves. If it was, there would be lots of fun though.

I think it is more likely that the bowser might get screwed in the head and dont stop pooring or dont poor at all, and suddenly you have a bill for $20k for a 60lts tank.

i thought the reason was due to the batterys of the mobile becoming dislodged from the mobile when dropped... and then maybe a bang,,, 8O

Umm, all that is is an Urban Legend.
It has never been proven that a gas station explosion was ever caused by a mobile phone. There is more of a chance that the high voltage in a car may set it off then a ~3.5V phone!

It's there as a un-needed disclaimer. I did an assignment on this. Below is a link with heaps of info.

It's a pity that when ever you get introuble, you can never argue. Cos no one will ever listen.

I cant argue whether it's true or not, just that it is still an acceptable hazard. My hubby has a dangerous goods licence and they are told the combustion is due to static electricity. These guys wear special uniforms and the trucks are specially fitted out to stop static from igniting fumes. So who knows but rather be safe than crispy!

I think static electricity is a bit different to mobile phones.

Mind you that in that one, no cell phones have ever been found involved in any of those fires...

But yes, you are right, static may cause fires

yeah I also did a little bit of study at uni on this, and it is virtually impossible, I would of thought that a car with 4-12 combustion chambers would be a much bigger hazard

what about the static electricity that you get when sometimes getting out of the car?

Phone + fuel = fire? Rubbish

It is about as likely as metal frames sunglassess hitting the ground and sparking causing an explosion.

Oops - don't mention that to them!

Phone + Fuel = A funny question!

If mobile phones could do such a thing people would have blown up petrol stations by now from the high fuel prices

yeah, i think it's got something to do with gas + phone.....
like turning on electricity inside a gas filled room..... boom.....

my friend owns a petrol station and he said that we are allowed to talk inside the car, but not outside.....

It is always adviseable to touch some metal eg, your car, before filling up to discharge any static in your body, more so if you are filling an LPG tank.

hmmmm this is became very interesting cause as few of you had point out, there are no solid evidence that said mobile phone can cause a mini "boommm" in petrol station.

But isn't it like in the 60's & 70's when the cigarettes company said that there are no solid evidence Cancer & Tobacco had any relation what so ever.

I was given some document by the Australia Communication ****** when I was working in one of the "network provider" regarding to mobile phones & cancer, its stated that there are no "real" evidence, but there are some study show, it can increase your chances. But since there are no real evidence, we are not allow to tell the public, or disclose the documents, the document was to use in marketing & "persuade" the public that there are no risk when you are a heavy mobile phone user.

I know since then the document had been distroy.

I'm with Steve on this one, why take the chance, end your talk and leave the phone in the car!!

I actually know some people that have not been able to fill up until they get off their phone

Lol 5 years or not.. Input away!!

There was a test done on myth busters :P they had like 6 phones ringing directly beside open fuel canasters and nothing happened... myth busted.. its impossible.. Its just the static that comes of the body that can cause flames during the fueling of a car situation.
