you only need to replace the water pump if its leaking...

when doing timing belt you should change:

all belts
all fuilds
flush brakes
flush radiator
change fuel flters (inline and pickup)
change spark plugs

that's more or less a major service... you can pick and choose from what's listed above

Does the inlet manifold need coming off? I am doing it next week so I was thinking of changing the plugs , rocker cover gaskets, inlet gaskets and timing belt all in one go.

I have flushed the radiator twice this week to get the coolant to stay nice and green including the reserve tank and its hoses.


What about any seals? Like main seals or rear main seals that people speak of? I just want to change things that I can change while everything is off when the timing belt is changed so it stays new.
even though if something like a pump has another 2 year slife left I wont leave it there. I will change it so everything lasts longer and I wont need to take things off in my ownership lifetime

changing a timing belt is not really something that an inexperianced person should try.

You could easily cause a lot of damage to your engine if you dont put it back properly.

I would not recomend you do it if you never done it before, unless you are going to have a mechanic there helping you.

agreed.... unless you know what your doing get it done professionally... it's not the same as changing an alternator belt.

Can I just ask, going by that other thread regarding leaking oil, would you guys reccomend doing the gaskets too, like the rocker cover, and the cam gasket? How my extra would that be?

hey boris. FOr sure I would do it no doubt. Put it this way. Your paying for the labour to have things apart to get to timing belt. The water pump is dear so you gotta think about that one but I would change every seal and gasket that I can so no leaks or stupid stuff occurs. do it right the first time. I mean just say you paid 400 bucks for timing belt and then 4 weeks later your cam seals leak. you gotta pay labour again jus to remove and fit a new one.

Rocker cover gaskets was 60 bucks for both the cam seals I dont know how much but i will find out this saturday. I dont even know what they look like or where they sit.

Svae a lot of money and time doing those ones yourself first. They arent hard at all. even doing the rear Spark plugs. Taking the inlet manifold off is easy as.

Yeah.. sorry still early... i'm probably going to do that, what you said except:

-the rocker cover gasket, (they are are gonna take the covers of anyway)
-possibly the spark plugs, as i don't have the special tool or where can u buy the tool, anyone?

It didnt come with your toolkit? I hate it when that happens.
You could even grind down a spark plug socket to make it fit.

Coolant flush. Just undo the plug on the bottom of the radiator. Its on the bottom on the driver side. Then shove the hose down where the radiator cap goes and flush unti water is clear. run the engine for 30 seconds with the heater one while you are flushing ( this is safe) and then open up the bottom hose from the radiator . Now the resservoir cap and the hose that attaches to it shove the hose theer and gently flush that too. the water will fly out from teh other end where the radiator cap is like someone pissing hehehe.
Make sure its clear, as usually it gets a lot of brown gunk.
now put everything back and refill the radiator with engine on and heater on.
clean reservoir tank and top out too.

a lot of the time mechanic will tell you rocker cover gaskets dont need replacing and only need tightening up. Just get a new set anyway. keep the car clean.
Only thing I regret is not changing cam seals. Didnt know the part number and didnt have time. but they werent leaking anyway. Majority of oil leak seem to always be from the rocker covers on the mivec motors
