Engine Rework

So I finally got myself the mivec engine, have been wanting to replace my GP engine for a while. Is there anything I need to do first before doing a straight swap in and out. I plan on changing the timing belts and getting new seals. What else do I need to do while the engine is out?

Also if there are any mechanics here who want to earn some money helping me out give me a yell

Timing belt and waterpump. While its out, timing belt coming off anyway so should do cam and crank seals and rear main.

There should be no problems with the GPX engine fitting into a GP fto is there? Should I also get timing belt kits and timing belts from autobarn/repco. Their is some extraordinary prices I have been quoted

no its the same motor.
yes you can get your belts from there but buy the kit and you will probably need to wait...

Damn I am pretty sure its a GR now that I look at it. Dont know how I got it wrong this whole time.

Now I am kind of worried as I dont think the GPX engine will fit.

I got quoted $330 for timing belt kit @ repco for a normal one and $550 for one that is supposed to be the next level. Should I just get the ones I see on ebay for $200?

the engines themselves are the same size and mount... you will just need the gpx wiring harness.

and there are differences in the belts for GPX and GR so dont just buy one from ebay and hope for the best.

mivec (gpx/gpvr) motor is 232 tooth and non mivec (gr/gx) is 226 tooth

You can change the motor to a mivec fairly easily - you need ECU and wiring loom and you're good to go.

I considered that Dan but their was no point when my current engine was on 230 000km with rattling coming from the lifters which means they have to pull the engine out anyway so might as well go slightly cheaper route

Oh, Dan isn't taking about actually converting your motor, he means engine swapping like you are doing.

Aren't you swapping your current GR motor (non mivec) to a GPX engine (mivec)?

oh i see. yes i am. i thought it would be a straight swap that i wouldnt need anything but the actual belts and seals. what is the go with the ecu? as in why do i need that?

You need an ECU as they are slightly different (different tunes and pins, one set up for MAP sensor the other MAF, mivec solenoids.. etc)

And a wiring harness as the Mivec one has an extra plug or two, the alternator is 4 pin on the mivec not 2 pin as is on the non mivec (you need an alternator as well) and Mivec uses a MAP sensor, non mivec uses a MAF sensor.

You'll need a new intake pipe too.

Lol cheers. I am looking at a 4 pin alternator from ebay and ECU"s (although I do get confused when they put automatic transmission ECU) I guess it matters whether it is auto or manual ECU.

Also what kind of intake pipe am I looking for?

Automatic ECU is separate altogether. It has blue pin slots and is under the center of the dash. Completely separate unit to the engines ECU.
