Engine light came on

Hi guys
When I started to drive my '94 FTO this afternoon (after a minute) the orange colour engine light on dash came on for nearly half a minute and then went off. After another minute it came back on and stayed for another half a minute. Then I stopped the car and didn't drive it yet and am waiting to get a expert advise. Car recently has done its service. Engine oil level is ok. Car recently made a squealing noise every time it is started in cold weather. It could have been a alternator belt but noise disappeared since warm weather hit Sydney. Engine has done 90,000km and time belt has recently been replaced.
However mechanic is closed until Monday so I would like to hear any ideas if you have regarding this issue. What could be causing engine light to be lit? Cheers.
