Project Sim

Well, after years sitting in the shed,Cameron an I made a concerted effort on the simulator.

I had previously cut the front off and also the back, but that's about as far as I had got. So here is what we achieved this weekend.

1. Put a sleeve over the driveshafts to keep them off the ground and allowing them to free spin.

2. Built an extension for the steering column, positioned a couple of bearings on it. Added a couple of cross-members and bolted the bearings down using power steering rack brackets (see below). The idea is to mount this shaft to a logitech G27 steering wheel, but instead of using the steering wheel on the unit, will be using the FTO steering wheel. Still need tobuild a custombracket and weld that to the end of the shaft. This bracket will be the same as the back of the logitech steering wheel.

3. Got the feel right on the brake by using the booster with a spring behind it. and got the clutch feel right by adding the master cylinder and re-routing the pipe back into the cylinder with a couple of kinks in it with pliers.

So still have to work out how to work the Logitech pedals from the FTO pedals, but well on the way.

Got a logitech G27 steering wheel setup to modify to fit into the simulator. It arrives yesterday. Think ive worked out how to attach the logitech to the extended steering column. Will be using the logitech gearstick in place of the normal gear stick at this stage. Will be dismantling the pedal set and either mount inplace of the pedals or under the FTO manual pedal set. More pics soon.

Got my logitech wheel in the post this week. Have now built an adapter on it that takes a steering column (reversed). The steering mechanism will consist of 2 FTO steering columns. the one attached to the wheel will feed into the bottom of the one on the car. Turning the wheel in the car will thel turn the logitech wheel.Should be able tofeel the force feedback through the steering column.

Nice!
There are adaptors that you can buy for those too, which removes the wheel, and changes it to a standard car BOSS kit.

Some more info further down this thread about adding custom wheels and relocating the buttons.

Yep, had seen those. Adapters are expensive though. And this way, I havent had to modify the wheel. Just removed 3 bolts and replaced them with longer ones. May have to buy the adapter to allow it to work on xbox though.

Fair enough, keen to see how it all works, and how it feels to use!

Ill be adjusting everything, so should be reasonable. If not, ill adjust some more.

Here is the steering wheel fitted. Need to build a bracket to hold it inplace though:

And have the gearstick sitting inplace. Still have to build a base to support it though:

Have you thought about what screens you are going to run?

Not at this stage. I still have to buy a decent screen (and possibly PC)

A cheap projector, and a white screen over the windscreen, and R-Factor on a half-alright PC.

think the back of the seats would get in the way. You need a certain distance away from the screen. Also, keystone would be a bitch if you used the actual windscreen angle

Rear projection then maybe? A flat fabric in front of the window, and rear projection?
