I want to find a simpler way of removing the alternator pulley for anyone wishing to fit a double pulley to drive somthing - like a supercharger for instance.

I've removed the alternator pulley before but only after removing the alternator which is a bit of a pain and may put some people off.

I know there isn't much access and certainly not enough to get a socket on the pulley nut with it in it's normal position but I was wondering what if the drivers side engine mount were removed and the engine then lowered on a jack, anyone happen to know if this would work or wouldn't it go down enough?
If not I may check it out at the weekend if i've nothing better to do.

You'd probably have more luck with a through-drive socket wrench... I bought one specifically for taking the alt belt tensioner bolt off in the tight space

Modify a socket to take a spanner. Ive done that. Works well. You can also just jack up the drivers side of the engine

I have a set of snap on spanners that fit. Cost a fking mint even on special, but I use them every day so they were worth it...

I'm sure a similar type of a different brand would also fit. They're 0 degree extended double ended ring spanners, or something with a small offset may also fit.

The other thing you can do is try a crow's foot or one of those tube socket setup thingos.

Sorry to burst my own bubble... I've just gone and tried with my set... The biggest it has is a 19mm, I think the alt bolt is a 21mm... it also is about 3mm too long to slot between the engine bay and the nut, but I think if it was a 21mm it would slip on nicely... not sure if they make a 21mm for it... otherwise what Dwayne said... grind down a socket

Just chuck a jack under the drivers side of the engine. It should give you 5mm more space. Use a block of wood or something to make sure you dont damage anything by putting too much pressure on a single point.

Incidentally - what part do you jack the engine up on - the sump with a block of wood?

Don't get how the through drive works.
Getting the pulley off would maybe be ok with an offset ring spanner but then after putting the double alternator pulley on which is quite deep there's no room to get anything in to tighten up the nut unless there's a massive offset ring spanner out there on the market and I could pirouette it into place.
I think Dwaynes idea of jacking the engine is the only option as space is that tight.

Yep, ive used a block under the sump, but there are other brackets and things you could use too. Obviously, dont put the whole weight of the car on it though. If you need more, remove the longbolt out of the drivers side uper engine mount.

The alternator is held on with two bolts. Isn't hard to do this first?
