well yesterday i got a letter from EPA victoria saying that my exaust is too loud or faulty

and yeah.. they want me to do a noise test on it, well i think the problem is that my muffler dosnt have a silencer... is it possable to buy one and just stick it on? because i dont want to take my muffler out and then put my stock ones back on just for the noise test... waste of time and money... can anyone help me? what should i do?

If its branded one, u can get them from anyway. If its from a local exhaust place then it would much harder, & you might have to put a resonator instead.

what ya mean your muffler doesnt have a silencer?
a muffler is a silencer, unless your talking about a reasonator.

What he mean is those silencer that fit into the muffler tips.

you sure your over the limit??
i've never been to an EPA test before, do they put the car on a dyno, or just rev it while stationary?
Becuase if your over the limit you obviously would of been caught while the car was moving, or taking off.
With most cars, when the car isnt moving, say in nutural, or park, exhuast noise is greatly les, as they isnt a great amount of load on the engine, compared to moving the car.

the car is stationary when they do the test. they put some device microphone thingy near the exhaust while the car is on to mesure how loud the car is in db. then they rev to i think 3k and then take the reading.

well i know my car when rev'd to 3k when stationary is a lot less loud than when driving.

unless u get the silencer welded on to your muffler, there is a good chance they will tell u to take it out for the test!
If its just screwed onto the muffler then they can argue that after the test u can just take it off, and b over the dB limit again, FTOluv recently had to undergo an EPA test and he just replaced his pod filter with the original air filter box to muffle to sound a little, he passed and his exhaust was pretty damn loud to the ear
And yeah i think he said they tested it at 3200rpm, but ive heard they test it at up to 45000rpm, depends on state regulations and who's doin the test

Legally you can take your defence to court & argue that the silencer is part of the exhaust/muffler regardless it’s a screw on type or not. And the chance of winning is very high, as long as you never going to take the silencer out, they will have no proof or evidence. Of course when you win you also get compensation

i was reading that a silancer that screws in the back can actually improve mid range touque?? is that true?

the places they listed for me to take the test is actualy the place i got my muffler put in (DAALDER EXAUSTS in Boxhill).. so i donno.. hehehe maybee they will let me off hehehe:P
coz they diddnt say anything about it when they installed it for me..
if the test it in idle i should b fine but if they rev it to 3

i think im screwed... so yeah... im just thinking to get the silencer put on, and then ill take it off after the test

and then i can keep the silencer for future if the EPA catch me again hehehe...
how much would the silencer be anyway?

if you're exhaust is over the EPA limit before entering the MIVEC zone then that is one massively loud exhaust and should be made quieter.

If u keep gettin EPA notices and u only have a screw in silencer then they r gunna figure out what u r doin, plus your story wont hold up if u decide to take it to court, no offense to people out there but if your exhaust is over the limit it is 2 loud anyway, get it fixed

i got mine tested a few weeks ago and yes i did get it tested at
Daalder exhausts at Box Hill as it is only 2 minutes from my house.
The best thing to do is put the standard air box back on.
Forget the silencer , becuz they wont accept a silencer which is removable. Thats one of the regulations for the test.
I highly doubt it will be over 90dB , becuz mine was test at 3200rpm (becuz no mivec engine in EPA book! yaY!) and received a 85dB. The legal limit is 90dB and every 3 dB means TWICE the loudness. So i was a fair bit under.
And as Ethan said , if yr exhaust is really that loud while stationary it probably would be best to change it. U wouldnt wanna get pulled over by cops or get EPA notices all the time. Its just not worth it.
Also, that EPA notice i received is framed and placed right next to my ICE trophy
