Woah woah woah...
So, you mean to say, that they're finally CONSIDERING this new-age thing called "Power to weight"...
My god... Someone check if money is falling from the sky! This HAS to be a dream...

If only they'd consider the tax on registration against fuel consumption as opposed to weight alone.
Perhaps eagerness outweighs patience.

imo it doesnt make a big difference, unless you have $$$?? cause i believe it more has to do with exxy cars as they mentioned golf etc etc, i dont know if its different to queensland but i read one a few monthds ago, it stated we could have upto 125kw per ton, if you do the maths, a stock gpx (on book) gives that amount so really i see no big difference there was a link that got posted on boost cruising (via redbook) showing known avail/unavail to p plates with those 'new laws' and ofcourse there were people arguing that nissan turbos wont allowed

That sentence says it all right there. Nissan don't do an "economical" turbo like the Europeans do. Hell, 5 years ago "Turbo" was a dirty word at BMW, and yet now they're using TWO of them in most of the M-division cars.

f**king stupid idea if you ask me, should be going in the other direction.
Just gonna cause more accidents, deaths and suspended licences.
Why on earth does the dmv give more power to those who havent fully developed driver awareness and experience yet? They should be finding a way to apply different rules to different groups of people, such as competant drivers who have years experience done courses etc over a little old half blind lady who the same rules apply.
Surely I'm not the only one who thinks this?

The point is that for example a crappy little VW WITH boost does much less power than for example a bigger N/A Ford. If you read the article, it says that its done on power to weight ratio. Whats safer - a new VW with reversing sensors/camera and smart braking (pre-brakes in traffic) with a tiny little turbo so it actually gets some speed (as in, enough to be practical) or a 3.0L V6 Holden that does 190kw?
Did you read it? honestly..?
Basically - Previously, P-platers had to apply for an exemption to drive the low-powered, turbocharged Golf 77TSI.
By contrast, the 3.6-litre V6 Holden Commodore SV6 with 210 kilowatts remains free of restrictions.
What's safer?

I dont doubt that the INTENTION of these laws are not good and true but does anyone seriously think for a moment that P platers will look at these rules and fist pump that they can buy a sh*tty 1.3L holden cruze turbo or something similar?
It also leaves it wide open with regards to weight - what theyre going to dyno and weigh on the road or pop the car in round the corner to a weighbridge every car they suspect might be over?
All p platers are going to do is find these allowed turbo cars and tune them up to exploit this PMR crap.
Another good point is that p platers generally dont have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on a brand new low displacement turbo engine, let alone want to, so if people are going to buy those cars, then they have the money to do them up.
If cops already have a hard time determining whether a car has a turbo or not, then determining whether a car is tuned, is meant to have that turbo etc etc is going to be much harder a task (been asked numerous times, almost every time im pulled up if my car has a turbo, and if im sure after they have taken a look under the hood...)
Im sorry but i just dont see less restrictions, specially on something like such a broad and volatile as PWR and turbos a good thing.
Its just gonna be too easy to strip out unseen dead weight and do a couple of mods on a turbo car to exploit this - "but officer the plate is on the car it is legal" - are they REALLY going to check for absolutely everything on the car??
Enough rambling though, i think where i stand on this issue is clear.
Yes the Intention and for some it will be a sensible, welcomed lift on a what should be a silly restriction but there are just too many wankers out there wanting to go fast for it to be effective on a target audience
