Today my employer told me that they want to nominate me for the "Snap-on Apprentice of the Year 2012" award. :D
This opportunity would give me a great start into my career and get my name out into the automotive industry.
I am currently a 3rd year heavy plant diesel apprentice (mature age, I know I don't act mature  )
I was hoping that you might be able to help me in my endeavour to achieve this desired trophy. (FTW)

http://www.snapontools.com.au/in_the_me ... f_the_year
http://www.snapontools.com.au/in_the_me ... s_and_tips

Here are the questions that I have to discuss in my application, any ideas would be helpful.....
1.What skills have you gained through your job and studies?
2.Do you feel that you work well and learn more in a team environment or when working independently?
3.Think about any social, economic and political issues affecting the motor industry in your state. How have these issues affected you?
4.What would you like to do once you complete your apprenticeship?
5.Why do you consider yourself a worthy winner of the 2012 Snap-on Apprentice of the Year award?

Thanks :D (I hope  )

@ bjk.........Why are you posting up pics of your mum?

P.S. I assume this thread will end up in "Gibberish Corner" just like all my other threads

It was only a joke in response to his joke, Lawso and I both know this.
Lawso knows he can be a mechanic if he wants to he just doesn't want to put up with apprentice wages.

I took my SLR camera to work today and took 80 photos of myself working on different vehicles/machines to use in my portfolio.
I had a tripod and used the camera timer. I took photos of the services that I was performing throughout the day.
I went around the yard with a spanner in my hand, opened engine covers, set up the camera/tripod and stood in the photo pretending to fix the machines.
When different trucks/machines came into the yard throughout the day I stopped them set up the camera/tripod and "went to work".
I got slightly 'introuble' off my boss about 5 times, "come on get back to work, you are supposed to be the apprentice of the year not the paparatzi".
Everyone else just laughed at me all day.
Oh well I got done what I wanted.

If I were you, I'd only submit photo 7 and 8. The rest you are just standing or sitting around or pretending to do work.

1.What skills have you gained through your job and studies? I think only you can answer this. If you say something like "I can now add a flux capacitor to any vehicle." and they ask you to prove it you'll be fucked.

2.Do you feel that you work well and learn more in a team environment or when working independently?
I certainly work well and learn in a team environment. Without the help and support of my colleagues I wouldn't have been able to get where I am today. However, I also take an active interest in mechanics in my own time by working on my own mechanical projects at home. I feel that it is an integral part of my development to practice and learn when ever possible.

3.Think about any social, economic and political issues affecting the motor industry in your state. How have these issues affected you?
The recent global financial crisis and troubles in Greece have had an effect on the general motor industry along with the onshore uncertainty around the production and maintenance of Holden and Ford motor vehicles. I have noticed the number of unnecessary or minor jobs coming into the garage has reduced. There is less money around to be spent on minor mechanical repairs, thus resulting in less trade coming through the doors. This also has a knock on effect when consumers try to fix or service machines themselves. These 'DIY' repairs take a turn for the worst and consumers realise that a professional is need.

The uptake of vehicles from Asia, while some what minor in today's market is not to be ignored, I have personally noticed an increase in numbers of these vehicles entering the Australian market. Therefore I have taken upon myself to expand my knowledge of this type of veridical to ensure my knowledge and skills remain relevant in today's volatile market. I continue to watch for trends and adapt to the changes I see so that I can continue servicing any machine or vehicle presented to me.

4.What would you like to do once you complete your apprenticeship?
Ideally I would like to one day open my own workshop and pass on my knowledge and skills to the next generation of mechanic while continuing to develop my own skills through research and practical experimentation. I see the automotive industry as an ever changing landscape and one where the mechanic is also the apprentice in one form or another. Always learning and growing. I'd also like to invent new techniques and tools to help maintain and evolve with new technology to gain a competitive edge over the competition.

5.Why do you consider yourself a worthy winner of the 2012 Snap-on Apprentice of the Year award?
Having worked extremely hard for the last 3 years I have dedicated all of my time to fulfilling my duties as an apprentice mechanic, both on and off the clock. I've taken the best knowledge and piratical experience that an apprentice can gain and combined them with the best tools available, Snap On of course, and endeavour to be the best apprentice anyone can have.

I take great pride in the fact that I was nominated for this award by my employer and look forward to the day when, in the not to distant future, I am able to nominate my own apprentice for the same prestigious award.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement :thumright: I am feeling very honoured being nominated, and I will still be very happy with it even if I get no further in the award, but I am giving it my best shot. :D

@AJ - Thanks heaps for the input I will use some of your ideas as I have quite a few of my own as well. I have more photos like #7,8 which I will use as well. :D
I think this quote might make it to my application - "I take great pride in the fact that I was nominated for this award by my employer and look forward to the day when, in the not to distant future, I am able to nominate my own apprentice for the same prestigious award".

@phi-tec - Thanks also for your help, I don't think I will consume any "disco bikkies" , but I do intend to add my FTO build to my portfolio 8)
