So yeah, mate ran a red light. and this is the aftermath. The panel beater reckons 5-6 weeks before its ready. apparently the side rail has been pushed back a fair bit and the whole thing needs to be straightened out or some sh*t. For it to take that long i reckon hes importing a wreck from japan to get parts from. :/ Don't know how i am going to live for the next month and a half :( It sucks that the headlight that needed re-conditioning was the one that didn't smash. Hopefully they still replace it. :D

I know this sounds like a stupid question but what did he hit?
If it was a red light then surely he would of been doing what 70+ ?
While it does look bad, for a what i would assume a t-bone or something similar, it looks very minor.

And if he is importing a wreck from Japan to get parts off, honestly import a good condition running car and wreck that one there, being a GR youd also get a good GPX imported, and steal all the salvagable parts off it like rear lights/panels struts suspension etc etc
Save a lot in the long run, have a good nick (hopefully) non-crashed car and upgrade to a mivec model - would be the best bet no?
(im assuming that since your importing a wreck from japan that it is outside insurance?)

I actually disagree, from those pics it's look rather bad.
If they are claiming the frame rail is bent, to what severity?
Any sort of structural damage (frame) is typically marked as write off.
That frame affects the geometry of the front end, steering, suspension, control.

Id personally be rather worried if the frame is bent, but again, to what severity is another story.

It is through insurance. I have already paid my $1k excess and they have dealt with organising the repairer etc. Im only assuming they are importing a wreck to get parts off. I could be totally wrong. I just don't see how else it could take 1 and a half months to fix. And that was my first though when he said it was bent and needs to be straightened. I thought they were always classed as a write off. The insurance company set my agreed value to $13,500. I'd rather the pay out than the car to be honest. The panel beater i spoke to today said he's very surprised 'they' didn't call it a write off. I'm worried now that the insurance assessors are trying to take the cheap way out rather than just pay me for a write off. Might have to call them tomorrow during opening hours and say i don't want my car back if it's going to have shocking handling from the now fucked up frame.

We T-boned a van coming through the intersection. The van did a 360 and had really minor damage that was visible. a small dent the size of a football infront of the rear wheel. and popped the opposite rear wheel. Likely more mechanical damage. Probably really lucky we didn't go through the intersection half a second earlier and have the van T-bone us.

And no, we didn't go through a red light on purpose. I have no clue why he didn't see it. Just distracted i guess.

Haven't dealt with mechanics much have you
Or insurance companies from the sound of it :P

My car took 6 months.

No joke.

Meanwhile, I hope he paid for your excess, enjoy the new higher price of insurance next year!

I agree it does look bad, but for a 60km+ crash, its not THAT bad, ive seen much worse from the same speed. T-boning a van would of saved a LOT of the impact not being front on with a solid car but rather i guess having the 'cushion' or whatever of just hitting a panel in front of virtually empty space.
Glad you guys are OK could of gone a lot worse.

IMO ring them up and get it to be written off and if they dont say youre putting in a compaint to the ombudsman or taking them to court for negligence. Sounds like it should be a write off indefinitely

Agree with astron. Almost every vehicle I've seen that's suffered frame damage has been a write-off. If your insurance is going to be fixing it, then question why they're fixing it and not writing it off.

Cars with even minor frame damage will never be the same once repaired. There's always something wrong, something that doesn't feel right about them.

Last time I said something like this on this forum I was called a racist

To be honest why not get another FTO? It seems like too much damage to fix for such an old car, and non-MIVEC no less.
Is your friend paying the excess? Will he give you his car while yours is off the road?
