Have had a word with my mechanic recently in regards to the health of my engine. Things aren't looking too good for my little 96 GPX right now. I can barely get out the driveway it has that many leaks as of now : . According to the report, it was not looked after too well and has had different treatment products put through it to 'mask up' problems before it was passed on to me. I have a great deal of respect for FTO's and it would make me so happy to get this car up and firing on all 6 again.

So to summarize what all the little details, the engine is rooted and will either need a full reco or need to be swapped out. For obvious reasons I chose the latter.

About a fortnight ago I travelled down to Wollongong and picked up a salvaged 95 GPX that had been in a collision with a fence and a garage door. I bought it mainly for parts and little goodies it had in it (mivec controller, manual gearbox etc). I also picked up a 95GPX Mivec engine from a importer (around 98,000 on the clock).

My intentions are to swap the engine(import) and the manual gearbox(from the wrecked gpx) into my sick little car. How much would I be looking at spending to get this done? Is it a feasible idea or a pipe dream?

Is there anything I can do myself to reduce the cost, or can I do it all myself? I have a hoist and many of the tools required, just none of the know-how.

How much general know how do you have?
It would reduce the cost greatly if you do most of the labour yourself obviously, but what i would think best would be to disconnect everything from the block, and take it out, and put the new block in on the mounts and get a qualified mechanic to hook everything back up, fire it up and test it etc as most of the labour costs are involved in ripping out and putting in the engine block itself (all of this is under assumption of course i have never ripped out an engine myself)
What i would also strongly suggest, is that since the engine would already be out otherwise is to half reco the engine yourself as in to replace leaky seals if it has some etc and do the timing belt and water pump (a must as the engine is 2k off a major service if it hasnt had one already?)
Is the new engine still in an engine bay?
Im not sure about the box though, might be a little complicated, probably not as simple as getting it up on a hoist, and unbolting and dropping it out is it?
In any case, the more confidence you get in this kind of thing the better, got a lot of handy DIY guides and cool stuff to save you some good $$$ specially since you have a hoist on hand.

fairly simple job actually, you have the tools dont be put off by the seemingly big job to do.

With new engine make sure you replace timing belt/waterpump etc and also new clutch for g/box. You can install both motor and box as one unit but little trickier however it is easier than putting box on with motor bolted in.

But it is a very simple job just mark everything and you will be fine
