Unregistrable Cars

Hi,
Can someone tell me, why is that some cars cannot be complied, registered etc?
I understand ones which have been written off, but what about some which are brought to Australia from Japan and can only be used for racing purposes? What is it that prevents someone in making it road legal and registering it?
As an example, I saw a Honda NSX for $18,000 (compared to others which were 60+ grand) but it could not be registered.
Thanks

I would imagine that a number of factors would play a role in certain cars being unable to be registered in Aus.
They would probably include - but are not limited too:
Safety standards (probably the biggest factor that gets most cars)
Emission standards (if we have any in Aus, im not sure)
The Gov. just plain not liking the car being registered due to the fact of it being to fast, too spartan etc
The setup of the car not meeting compliance (i.e. the same type of problems trying to engineer a ridiculous engine conversion)
Im sure there are many more factors, but most likely it wont either meet safety standards, and/or is deemed to "unsafe" for Aus. roads.
Unfortunately the only thing you can do is fall in love with another car

There are also factors like:
Too modified, and can only be used for rally/race
But I would say the main one is that if the car was produced locally, you can't import from another country. You have to buy the local equivalent.
Great example of this is the Evo 1-3 range... Because Australia had the GSR lancer (with the 1.8ltr Turbo AWD), it means that as it was produced and sold locally, that none of the Early Evo's in the same years can be bought in. Only way around it, is for it being a yellow import... So, you had to own it in the country of origin for over 12 months, then bring it over as a "private import"
Hope this helps...

And when you drive past a Highway Patrol car that has plate recognition you will get done for unregistered/uninsured vehicle ... Which is very costly...
And if in NSW and drive through a Safety Camera, you will get pinched for it as well...
So, maybe not the best idea... lol ...

Lol .. You live, you learn ...
I had old plates on my GSR/EVO when I was driving from my place to the mechanic... And a few little test drives when the car was built ... But that was driving on the road (to mechanic) at 7am ... and then only in his street to test drive it... When I took it down to the panel beater, I got the day rego ... And again when I drove her home and hunted for the engineer...
And now.... I don't even drive it....

He would have been summoned, but not for no plates. It would have been for the three hookers in the back and the coke

. He would have been going home after a DIY day

.

AGREED
Yeah, was given a field court attendance notice. It could also have been a whole lot worse! They let me off a bunch of other things because I was cooperative.
My brain was very much still under construction at age 17
Bags of coke didn't help the matter either!
