Twas an absolute bitch to remove but the end tally was me -1, fuel filter - 0.
Brown sludge came out the inlet side when I disconnected the fuel lines.
Ryco replacement was used and as a result the car is more responsive, yay!
Also, it seems to be idling better too which is a plus.

haha wow, so how often do people change their fuel filters? I'll be doing mine next week

i think the factory book says something like every 30,000 k's
ive changed it once, il probably leave it for 50-60,000 k's though

i'd like to see if changing mine makes any difference to my idle...
