Ok, so my friend tops up his radiator waters.

He drives to work... Little does he know, he forgot to put the lid back on the radiator. As he drives in the highway, white smoke comes out which i assume is mass evaporation. Waits for NRMA to rescue him...

What sort of damage has he done to his car? If any?

But then I was thinking, he just needs to put more coolant/water and this time, put the lid back on...

If he stopped immediately after it happened, that should be fine. Just add water/coolant & put cap back on.

Extreme worst case scenario, a cracked head or blown head gasket.

^^^ This. It all depends if he let the little red temp needle hit the hot mark.

It just steamed... He said the dash didn't show an overheat indicator.. bulb/fuse is not blown as he sometimes saw it go on when his radiator was low on water - radiator leaks.

Hang some salmon over the top of it. At least if the engines fooked he's got some nice poached fish for tea.

On a slightly related note - related in that I also remembered it - we once got some smoked fish, wrapped it in tin foil and tied it onto the exhaust manifold of a guys car at work who was a real dick.

It took him nearly a month to work out where the smell was coming from, over which time it got worse and worse

I worked at an asylum at the time with lots of fun and games going on
