Car broke down :(

Hi guys,
car broke down tonight so I was wondering what on earth would be wrong with it.

I probably won't be able to get to the mechanics until Friday.

Basically the temperature was unusually high (the weather wasn't that hot) and then there was an extremely loud grinding noise coming from the engine bay, I'm thinking it could have been some sort of belt?? I could just get it to start in the end but it went down to 200RPM then shat itself once I put it in drive.

Any ideas on what it could be? Overheating? Loose belts? Something worse? :(

Cheers

Well the first thing that came to me as I was reading that was piston rings gone and the piston was grinding the cylinder.
When you started it again did it sound like it had a clunking sound at all?

Next has it got any oil in it?

When I started it again after I got home (and it cooled down) it started like normal. I don't want to drive it though in case that noise happens again.

Oil change was done about a month ago so that's all clean. The car has been running near the high temperature recently, and it looks like one of the main fans at the front had stopped working. I'm thinking it just overheated like crazy, but that doesn't explain the loud mechanical grinding noise :\

CHeck your coolant and oil levels while cold, and check your belts on the front of the engine. Then maybe take the forward most timing belt cover off and check the timing belt is OK.

sounds exactly like what heppend to my old engine... bearings were f*cked, not sure about urs though.. but thats what happened to mine when it randomly started cranking up under the hood.. thought it was the fan or oil but nahh.. still driveable but kept stalling and breaking down not sure about temperature though

All fixed :)
Turns out it was a radiator pipe, which explains why my car was unusually hot recently. Stupid me should have got it checked out a few weeks ago...
