FTO AUSTRALIA

I have finally gotten some time to transplant a new (as in from the wrecker and not siezed like the old one) Engine into my FTO. I have gotten everything else fixed up and ready to go, fresh timing belth, water pump, seals and pulleys, not to mention a nice new set of extractors. The next challenge is actually making the swap.

I am doing it in my garage at home with an engine crane. The engine bay on the FTOs is not known for its free space or friendly working environment, has anyone had much luck putting an engine in and out through the top of the car or have you always dropped it out the bottom with a hoist? were there any major problems or tricks you found?

Personally I would drop it out the bottom but it is definitly do able to pull it out the top but a lot more stuffing around

yip can do, couple of things though

If auto remove box first, if manual can remove with box on

While still possiblt to do with auto on still its a bitch and I have done it all ways on the fto

just remove as much as possible like battery holder etc its fairly straightforwad mate

The current plan has as much as possible of the existing infrastructure pulled out or shifted to the side, compressor, power steering, battery tray. It is a Manual GPX but we are going to try and leave the gearbox in the engine, hopefully with the RHS mount and brackets removed there should be enough room to slide it off. Of course this may just end up as a massive cock up and i have to take the gearbox out with it and disconnect the stub shafts etc. We shall see

I generally pull them out the bottom these days (without a hoist). Is possible with a trolley jack and a bit of effort. Easier and less chance of damage IMO.

We ended up pulling the engine and the gearbox out through the top. Not too many hassles really, managed to keep the airconditioner together but had to drop all the accessories and an engine mount off so we could get it out properly
