Hi all

As my FTO just clocked over 150 thou kms, I decided that I was going to try to give it a bit of a service (bit by bit). So I decided to start with the oil filter (and it needed it, the previous oil was very black).
Anywho, I spent this afternoon doing that however I now have a couple questions:
Firstly I put on the filter but I forgot to run some grease/oil along the washer, oops. Is this a big problem? What purpose does that oil/grease serve? (I remembered and tried to take the new one off but it wouldn't budge)

And secondly, after running my engine for probably about 20mins, the new oil still looks very dark on the oil stick, Am i expecting results too soon or does that mean I should do another change soon to really get new stuff running through the system?

did you change oil too? It will still be black if not

also the oil on o-ring helps to create a seal with block to help prevent any leaks from between them

Yeh I thought it was to create a seal, but theres no leaks yet and I have done about 40mins of driving now, so hopefully it is all good
And yes I changed the oil, that is why I was surprised it was still quite dark, although I hadn't driven it around when I checked it, I will check it again tomorrow morning It definately drives smoother though (may be my imagination looking for it.. haha)

Normally you use an oil flush additive before u change the filter and oil. Im pretty sure it thins the oil and cleans it out before you dump it. You might find youll have to do another oil change as it might have been left in there a while.

Ok well I checked it this morning and looked lighter, not quite out of the bottle, but dramatically lighter than what it was last night. Looks like the filter must be working, haha. Now hopefully I don't get any leaks from the filter due to my forgetfulness.. haha
Would that be something that would have happened already (I've done over an hour of driving since I changed the filter) or would it be a long term thing?

If your that worried just pull it off now and wipe some oil around it.

haha, yeh I tried yesterday but I couldn't be stuffed trying to wrestle the thing back off.. so it's staying.. haha
I'm thinking air filter is next, any recommendations? (I'm looking at the KnN?)

You should never over tighten a oil filter mate.

+1 and it will never be same colour as from bottle once its benn run in motor even after 5 mins
and no i have never used a flush additive before either

Hi, it is not a big deal if you have not wipe a layer of oil over the seal. it will probably catch some left over oil on the surface while tightening anyways.
Talk about oil flush, i want to share my experience with you guys.
Before i did my VRS kit awhile ago, i pop in the most expensive oil flush i can find "Liqui Moly" Engine Detox, thinking that this premium product will do what it claimed, thoroughly clean and ‘detox’ the engine’. Left it idle for 15min and flush and it turns out very dark, which is expected as the oil had already ran 8000km. I do not know at what level the flush have help cleaning the engine at this point.
When the cam cover is opened up, it was very shocking to see there was sludge everywhere, roughly about 5mm thick!

I have to spend hours, using 2cans of degreasers and screwdriver to scrape the sludge off. After the VRS kit service, it is filled with fresh oil with new filter, planning to run it for 1000km, using the oil as a ‘flush’.
Did 900km. Oil still looks clear from dipstick. Pop in Nulon oil flush for 15min, drain and it looks a lot darker. I reckon the flush helps removing some left over soft sludge, thats about it. I would recommend it if the condition of your engine is well maintained and the flush will help maintain it, but the more stubborn sludge will not bulged.

What the hell is the sludge doing on your cam cover? The whole point of the flush is to FLUSH the sludge to your sump for removal and all that has done is flick it around the engine and then baked to the cover.

As said I have never used them nor will I ever use one.

i thought i have a great engine. As i have been changing oil+filter every 6000-7000km every since im the owner for the past 2 years until the cam covers got off.....

If I wanted to clean my whole engine out and make it run as smooth as possible, what would be involved? (or is it really just a hassle?) I just feel that it could be running smoother... Changing the oil definately helped, and I'm sure the air filter will too, I just wonder if there is more I can do? (and I'm not mechanically minded as such... ...yet... haha)

spark plugs, spark leads, fuel filter, gearbox oil (+ filter if it as a auto) air filter as starters

Beautiful are any of these tricky?

spark plugs and coils requires removal of throttle body, air intake plenum
fuel filter is abit tricky as its pressurised and its located at firewall which is hard to get to.
the rest are easy.

Don't forget
fuel injectors can get build up
Termo gaskets ( gets colder air into the engine )

Can't you just run a thinner oil threw the engine to clear it out
Also has any one ever removed sump and cleaned it out dose it get much build up in there
Also mayb reset ecu once you do the upgrades as it may affect fuel to air will make it run smoother
