Maybe swap the wires around

It's just a stab in the dark.

that would be because its not connected to sender

is the sender on the sump plug for the stock oil gauge???
there is a wire connected to the sump plug but its a bit frayed. and it gets in the way when trying to undo the sump plug.
ive followed the wire in the engine bay but in some places its hard if impossible to trace where it goes.
oil filter adapter is connected to a oil cooler so cant have a sender there.
