Standard Clutch - DESPERATE!

Hey boys,
Driving yesterday at around 80kms and about to drop down to 4th to slow down - I had no clutch, no bangs .. nothing at all .. Its completely gone! Seeing this is my everyday driver and being pregnant trying to catch public transport in the cold to work isn't a good thing so I need a new one ..
We have been ringing around and we are looking at around $400 for a new one (standard), not going to replace the exedy .. Do you guys know anywhere cheaper?
Aza/ Bennoz/ Dstocks - Is it ok to put a second hand one in? (Have to go to the ones I trust in this instance! hehehe .. )
Dstocks - If so, do you have any laying around

hey,
if the clutch was working fine prior to when it happened then chances are the problem will be a shot seal inside your clutch slave cylinder. This has happened to me twice in a year and half...
Its a $20 seal replacement kit from repco. However i recommend sourcing a new one as the reason these seals burst is because the inside of the cylinder gets rough after time.

A 2nd hand one will be fine for the short time fix

there is one on eBay new for $300.

is there any way to tell if its the seal? the clutch has never slipped or nuffin

yeh, thats why im pretty certain its that seal. Sounds exactly like what happened to me.
Only way to find out for sure is to inspect it, not very hard though...
The clylinder is mounted on the front of the gearbox, you will need to bleed the clutch out, disconnect the clutch fluid line on the cylinder, undo 2 bolts to take it off, pull off dust cover and the rod which sits inside. Then the piston can slide out... you may need to blow it out, and the seal is on the back end of that piston. The seal is a challenge to get on, unless u have some circlip pliers, you might need to be creative. Also remember which way the seal was put on.
Its about a 30 minute job to take it apart and get it back on.
You definitely should inspect the seal first, otherwise you might go out to spend $400 on a clutch and have the same problem
PS: if you get the seal kit from repco its sourced from a HJ galant. There is two sizes, get the biggest. From memory one is 19mm the biggest is 20mm

The clutch can just go on you with out any warning.
Did the pedal just go soft and you could not get ang gear or did it still have pressure in it?
But do the full checks on every thing first as said.
Start with the normal oil levels then move on to other things.

As per above, I've got $50 on the clutch slave cylinder.
Not that expensive or difficult to replace.

You can check it by having a fiddle with the rubber boot on the end of it, if you end up covered in fluid, you've found your problem.

Hey everyone!
I put it in neutral then pushed on the clutch and had absolutely no compression .. We checked the fluid levels today and they were almost empty .. Once we filled it up a bit (just to see before bleeding the clutch) it started to get a bit of compression back for one or two stomps of the clutch .. Then approx enough time for me walking inside and out to get my phone, they was a massage pile of fluid .. So, I can garantee it must be a seal or the cylinder?
Thanks Tippin for all your help! Going to pick up the kits tomorrow and taking it to a mechanic we know to put the new seals on .. Hopefully, it will solve all the problems
I didn't think I blew the clutch because it has never slipped or anything ..

*Drum roll*
It was the seal on the slave cylinder. Repco managed to give me the wrong seal but my mechanic got one within about half an hour. No other damaged was caused even with the partner not using a clutch to change gears (not recommended – I know!). All up, an hour and a half at the mechanic and $130 later – she is all fixed

hi everyone..
been lurking here for a while, haven't said anything till now.
what great timing to find info like this! sounds like i have the same prob cos i was driving home today and my clutch was working fine, then all of a sudden there was nothing.
anyway, after a few mins it seemed to work for bit, managed to get up to 3rd gear and just crawled home (i was almost home anyways).
i think i'll play it safe tomorrow and get it towed to the mechanic. hope it won't cost too much! wish me luck!

firstly WTTC
if your still getting some pressure in the clutch it means that the seal has not completely shot, its just torn on the edge and fluid is getting through...
its not a difficult fix, but if you need someone to do it for you its probably a better option to take the cylinder off (2 bolts) and take it to a clutch & brake centre rather than a mechanic. Mechanics tend to rip you on easy fixes
