grinding noise from front right. What is it?

hey guys. Just noticed this morning. That when i accelerate i get a grinding noise coming from (assumingly) the front right wheel.
Pop quiz, what's the problem there.
Shouldn't be the brakes as joe and rick's just checked it a week or so ago

check the wheels & brakes, might have picked up a stone.. also check the meat on the brakes anyways.. also dodgy wheel bearing comes to mind..

jack up the front so the wheels are off the ground & then spin them by hand .. you should be able to hear a scratchy noise

now you've reminded me to ask about my grinding noise..

actually posted that when i was waiting for Kmart tyre and auto to check it out. (kmart, because they were the closest and i was trying to drive as less as possible until this is sorted) and no they didnt find anything. (dw i dont trust them either)
it honestly reminds of the sound my computer fans make when their bearings shag out.
I'll jack the car up tomorrow (provided it's not raining), and have a look, i'm thinking bearings...
But.. how can i tell if it is a dodgy wheel bearing?

Take the wheel off and turn the hub by hand. It should be smooth. You will feel it if it is shagged.

Nope...

Leave the wheel on, jack the car up and spin the wheel with your hand. Now with your other hand grab the shock. If your bearings are fucked you will be able to feel a small little vibrations through the shock. If they are fine you shouldnt feel anything.

right.... couldnt spin the wheel that fast. but nothing at the speed i spun it at.
it seems to make the noise when under heavier than usual acceleration while traveling at about 20km/h, probably stops at about 40km/h.

Any other suggestions guys? :(

so it seems like it's not the wheel, have taken it off and looked and poked around, didn't see anything.
and have recently realised that it only does it when it's between 2100 and 2400 RPM, so i'm assuming it might be a loose belt or something?
any ideas guys?

Just thowing this out there as diff people discribe sounds differently
Is it a griding or screching sound
If its a screch and is your ac on when your pulling away if so it might be your ac belt that was happening to me when I first got the car

Does the car have to be moving or can you hear it by just reving it?

bduffman - not the AC belt as my AC's never on (out of gas... something else I have to fix lol), but yeah it's more a grinding noise than a screeching, not as high pitched. with that said, it may not be something physically grinding anyway.

simon - good point, I'm going to try it not under load today.

Doesnt matter if your ac is working or not the pulley can still make noise.

Can you tell what side the noise is coming from?

sounds like it's coming from the driver side, so.. the pulley and belt side :(

Well find out if it makes the noise with no load or not and we will go from there.

If you wanna drive down to yatala at some stage I could take a look at it for you.

doesn't seem to be making the noise when not under load (i.e. in N or P)

and thanks for the offer simon, i might just take you up on it if i can't figure it out soon. :)

these may be stupid questions... but aren't thrust bearings associated with the clutch? being auto do I have one? and isn't the gear box on the passenger side? i'm fairly certain the sound is coming from the driver side...

you know... if it wasn't my car (which means I have to spend money) I'm almost glad to find problems, since I get to learn new things lol
lets just hope I don't learn the same way I did with computers... hope there's no "BOOM" involved in this learing curve lol
