Got a horrible sound coming from gearbox and possible clutch slipping or gear box going in 1st and 2nd (GPX 5sp manual). Anyone got any good mechanics they can recomend? I couldn't find a recent post.

Try new gear box oil first as this may fix the 1st and 2nd gear problem.
as for the horrible sound dos it go away when you put the clutch inn?

Hey Simo good to see another ACT member around :D Try Total Traction Services in Belconnen wouldn't take my car anywhere else in my opinion. Honest guys and I can certainly vouch for their work considering the amount of work they have done on my car

Used to get my FTO fixed there as well before I moved interstate. They have worked on quite a few FTO's and are honest and do good work. I can highly recommend them as well.

The sound dissapears when when clutch is depressed. It sounds like a noisy bearing but over the weekend it was leaking what looked like transmission fluid, it's the first it has had a real leak but the noise has been there a while only last week it got bad, there's a coulpe of small oil leaks and the fluid on the driveway was black as sin, but to touch it didn't feel like engine oil. I do oil and filter every five thou and haven't noticed any real oil level drops.

I've only noticed the slipping in 1st and 2nd under load but the noise is there through all gears.

Thanks for the help to every one else! I might give Total Traction a call. Hopefully the gear box hasn't had it cause I did some research on rebuilds and it's bloody expensive!

That'll be your thrust or 'push out' bearing on its way out. Once its gone, there's a good chance your clutch will be nearing its life end too. Time for a new clutch kit (comes with bearing.)

Was a bearing but not push out! Apparently the input shaft bearing went and the gearbox drained itself through the clutch. Hence I guess that's why it was slipping on load. I got a second hand box and replaced it and had the clutch done at the same time, had the rear engine seal done at the same time cause it was leaking.
Picked up the car last night bloody brilliant now!
By the way if anyone's after a good mechanic Michael and Thomas at Total traction rock. They don't over charge and all the work was done quick and with out fuss. Would Highly recommend them!!

On another front I've now got the old gearbox. Do you think anyone on the site would be interested I don't want any money for it but it's going to the scrappers otherwise. If it could help someone out I'll happily donate it.

I might well pick that up off you. I work in Canberra 3 days a week, so can probably arrange something. Glad you are happy with Total Traction. They fix quite a few FTO's now....... Started with me a couple of years back, but ive directed a few people there since. They do a good job at a reasonable price.
