Hi guys, just need an opinion, if your engine is screwed, head gasket damage or crack in the engine, would u do a) recondition the engine, b) get a 2nd hand engine, c) try to sell the car or d) others?

Chill mate, I've only had it for 2 weeks and only drove it twice. Havn't had the chance to appreciate it yet. Gotten a lot of sh*t with the engine, alternator and brakes.. Still in the midst of fixing it. But yes the FTO IS awesome.

Mate i have never not had a problem with my fto, but im getting there. The trick is to buy another really cheap car and drive it around until u get the fto in tiptop, so you dont have to constantly fix things and drive it with problems

Damn.. That must be quite bad. How much did u spend patching it up? Waiting for quotes now. Do you reckon I could still drive it while waiting? Maybe for another week or 2.

I'm still in uni. Getting another car is out at the moment. Just hope to patch the engine for now and probably do up the rest of the car when I get some more money. I knew it was too good a bargain. 6.5k for 95 GPX mivec with extra set of front leather seats and after market rims. Sigh..

I hate to say this and its probably not completely true for all above, but if you pay for an FTO at the lower end of the cost scale, there is a high chance you will have problems (thats why they are cheaper). Although this is not always the case, it is a fairly good guide. In my opinion, any FTO that is going for less than 9-10K is going to be dodgy in some way. If you happen to get a good one for under that price then id say you are lucky or know what to look for.

I have owned 3 different FTO's that have been my daily driver and I havent had significant problems with any of them. This doesnt include the FTO ute I have or the one ive just finished building either.

At the end of the day, they are no more or less reliable than any other car. You just have to get one that has been well looked after and maintained.

i would just wait till i have enought funds as quoted my mechanics and save another $1000 on top as there will most likely more stuffs to repair/replaced or to be serviced along the way as the engine is opened up.

I Bought the car for $10,000. If you include everything I spent on it, besides fuel/insurance, I would say around 15k... But I got ripped off by my first mechanic (just general mech) so now I go to an FTO mechanic and they quote me for so much less its stupid. Almost half.

I do realise half the stuff is wear-and-tear stuff but still, some of it shouldve been replaced before he sold it. Especially the clutch which went on the 3rd day(I wasn't driving it hard whatsoever)....
The owner before me, or before him or whatever mustve flogged it, hard.

Things that went wrong with that car include.

Clutch
Gearbox (needed a full reco)
All Brakepads & Discs
All belts.
Starter motor
Stepper motor
Alternator

(had to rego it aswell but I knew about that ofcorse :P)
... I think that was about it.. I had the car for 6months. Sold it for $9400. Cut my losses and got rid of it.
