Ok, so my hidden fear had been verified the other week. My mivec is not working, if at all from the day I bought it. I know that the incorrect alternator can be a cause, but does any one know of other possible reasons?

2nd thing it could be is your running a GR motor

incorrect alternater sounds like the thing to check first

Oh haha. Although it would make certain mods easier...
Can the alternator be checked while it's still installed as to what type it is?
I know... It's a tight engine bay...

Maybe a part number, not a 100% but it's worth a try.

check oil level... mivec require good oil pressure...
also check the solenoid fuse....
alternator is charger if its not working your car wouldnt last 20 mins.....

It's definately not the oil as I have changed it a few times and never noticed mivec kick in. And it could be the alternator as the moronic car yard mechanic might have used a gr/non mivec alternator which would still charge the battery and let the car operate.
Solenoid fuse I'm gunna have to google as to what it is and looks like, but I'll add it to the list of things to check.

Try and access the plug on the alternator. Can't remember from memory whether you can squeeze your hand through to reach it though. Was able to do it on a 300zx so I can't imagine why you couldnt on an fto

But yeh unplug it and see if its a 4pin or 2pin. 4pin = mivec alternator, 2pin = gr alternator
On another note, where's your oil cap located? lol....

Yes you can access it, but does require some swearing.
And yes the alternator can cause mivec not to work. It has happenened on many peoples cars.
