An electric converted fto actually won an endurance record back in the late 90s. Someone posted the article here a while back.

I have actually been thinking about doing this for a while now. Just gotta wait for the price of the lithum batteries to come down which should be in the next couple of years and I'm doing it

An electric FTO would be pretty neat. However, it would almost certainly have to be rear wheel drive which will require significant strengthening of the chassis, not to mention the regenerative braking system to make it actually drivable at any range. Not an easy project but by no means impossible.

oh and a control system for such high power brushless dc motors is hardly cheap or trivial either but high power mosfets and capacitors are certainly much cheaper than they used to be.

Oh and charging li-on and li-po batteries suck. If not controlled properly they explode.

Let me start by saying that I am not trying to be a smart ass in this reply. I have a great deal of respect for the members on this forum and I am just trying justify my earlier post with examples.

I never stated that it did need to be rear wheel drive. It is just one of the easier options and is how the Tesla Roadster (as per my previous post) is constructed.

If you mean't "BS, it has to be rear wheel drive". Note the comma, it changes the whole meaning of your argument then:

Not all electric cars have one big motor that powers the rear wheels. For the most efficient regenerative braking, each wheel must have a motor on it. The following is an example

and i am completely disagreeing with you. It does not need to be rear wheel drive........ better yes but isnt every car.

Thanks for the link.

That guy is hilarious. It is a shame that he doesn't detail the performance in any of his videos. The daewoo did 0-80 in 24 seconds which wasn't that inspiring but his looks to be faster.

Yes...was researching this at one stage. Thinking about maybe doing it one day in my FTO shell.

Already been done in heaps of different types of cars but not really blowing people's skirts up yet. Once completed it does work out to be very cheap as no petrol and you literally plug the car into a power socket and let it charge overnight.

The car may gain extra weight though as you can shed weight from the exhaust system, fuel tank and engine but the battery cells if you want it to last say 300~500km per charge can weigh from 300~500kg. They are also massive so best scenario is you lose the back seats the mount the battery there then you would have effectively have a Midship mounted engine. :D

You can fit smaller setups in the boot but it depends on how much distance you want between charges.

The problem with the daewoo set and the like is the batteries. They are using old lead type which weight a tone and are no where near as good as lithuim ones.

Apparently there is going to be a massive decrease in price of the lithuuim batteries which will make it much viable.......300-400km per charge and a full charge in 3hrs. SOunds pretty f**king awesome to me.

Yeah, unfortunately these lead batteries are holding back any worthwhile electric cars.

Here are a few pics of a Hilux I came across at a previous dyno day. I was talking to the owner who was a Electrical Engineer and really knew his stuff and he was saying that he could of made it twice as efficient if Lithium-ion batteries were cheap enough. Batteries made it way too heavy (worse mileage) and left no room for practicality purposes. Wasn't cheap either.

Did about 40kw atw :lol:
