Power draining

On the weekend I started the car and let it warm up for 10 min as usual, when I got in, and put it into reverse, the battery sign went down and the lights dimmed, I switched it off instead of revving it and it wouldnt start again.
While I was gone (took brothers car) the NRMA guy came and told my brother it could just be the alternator not powering up or something and it happens sometimes.
Next day, i tried to start it and it was like it was trying to catch on and start but it wouldn't, so i revved it in neutral a little and it started up.
Have had no problems since, starting fine. Took it to mechanic, said he couldnt find anything wrong with it.
Any ideas?

Ok, this is retarded.
Mechanic said it's the alternator and had to take it the auto electrician. Mind you, the car starts fine now that the alternator is charged up fine, the problem only arises when I started it from a cold start.
Anyway, took it to the auto electrian who said it's not the alternator but the battery instead? This morning the NRMA guy said it was most definately the alternator and he even said this to my mechanic but now i've ended up just getting the battery replaced, and nothing done to the alternator.
Wtf is going on anybody know? Getting different things from different people..

had the same problem about 2 weeks ago mate,
every day the car kept struggling more and more on cold starts until it finally wouldn't crank at all
went out and bought a battery with high cold cranking amps which did the trick quite nicely.
Also im sure the NRMA guy would have checked, but if the battery is low on water it wont stay charged over time.
