- on the way back from bens house and heard a noise at the lights. pulled over and popped the bonnet and the engine sounded like a truck on idle. so i revved it a bit and the sound gets louder, it doesnt speed up like a loose alt/power steering belt either.
the sound is coming from the middle driverside of the engine bay, more so the back of the intake manifold and timing belt.
heres the vid:

well i took the car to work as its my only way of transport and its significantly slower in acceleration. Sometimes it will take half a second from when i put the acceleration pedal down to get the car moving. Before it was instant. Also i noticed this morning that when i turned the car on it takes a second to start up aswell.
Im taking it to a mechanic on wed to figure out the problem but if any of you fto gurus could help me that would be much molre easier for my mech and would be gladly apreciated.

Is there any way i can check this? I have so far removed the front cover and all looks good, removed 4 bolts holding the back cover down but it seems to be held in by the alternator. Any way to get this off without dropping the alternator?

you dont need to remove alt just wiggle it and should remove unless you missed a bolt....
now get a 22mm socket onto the crank bolt and turn until main pully marks up with top dead centre on lower belt cover. Now check to see if your cams marks line up with timing marks on rocker covers. (you may have to do 2 revolutions of crank bolt to line up cams with rocker marks)

another thing may be knock sensor (located inbetween the V of banks under fuel rail)
have you checked vacuum lines?

Thanksfor the info mate - will definately get on to that tomorow arvo. Will be taking for ford to work tomorow
Aza - LOL thats the answer for everything

if anything i'd cut my losses and get a 180 or s13...... But i don't think things are that bad (well the mechanic will tell)

^^^ the car is going on the back of my mates trailer tomorow to go to the mechanic so it wont be on the road anymore.
Had my go at the rear cover again, couldn't get it off... AGAIN

wtf. Angled it and fingered my way around it to check for extra bolts but still - nope. seemed blocked by the bracket holding the air con pipe and pulley for the alt belt. Gave up as sunlight died and moved onto removing my underbody neons.
So tomorow or how ever long it takes, hopefully they will find the problem/fix it and ive got it down for brake pads/machine disks, oil change/trans/brake fluid etc....install my cusco lower strut and properly secure the vr wing down.

mechanic got back to me - turns out the bolts on the pulleys had broken and the timing belt had skipped. piston hit a valve and
i need a >>new top gasket kit<< (???) apparently whoever did the timing belt before had not put the pulleys on properly.
arghhh! more expense
if anyone has what im looking for please pm me.

I replied to your WTB post, but again, if you've had valves hitting pistons, its gonna be easier to do a whole motor swap. Have they pulled the head off yet to see if there's nay damage to the pistons?
