umm that is one of the most retarded excuses towards this new law...
"I don't want to see young hoons putting their lives or the lives of others at risk, just because they think their car looks better 15 centimetres closer to the ground," Mr Daley said.
"Raising or lowering a vehicle's height can put the driver, passengers and other road users at risk.
"It can affect handling, braking and safety features such as electronic stability control."
...wtf?
schucks to nsw

Thats not new. Technically, everything they say about these things has been around for years. Did you know you arent even supposed to change the colours on the dash or upholstery witout an engineers certificate because its supposedly distracting. Hes just a w$%ker trying to drum up more business for engineers, or is toeing the line for the media. Either way, by saying those thing, he thinks it makes him "more important". Trust me if he though he could introduce a rule that you needed an engineers certificate to wipe your butt, he be in there enforcing it! They cant police it anyway, so its pointless. How are they going to tell if you lowered your car after a certain date. You just get a mate to do it for you and then say it was done before then. They couldnt prove a thing. Now having said that, lowering your car by 15cm is way too much and probably would adversly effect handling (the gangsta look with huge chromies -

). But have you ever noticed that the people that do this dont tend to hoon anyway (car doesnt handle well enough I guess).

It is actually important to your handling. On a car like ours, it isn't likely to affect it much, since you're not lowering more then about 5cm. On other cars however it will affect the handling and if done wrongly will greatly increase bump steer which is dangerous.

Sounds like the original law made more sense.
Considering all the changes made in NSW to road rules whenever they bring out the word "safety" I put it on the same level as a politician using "for the children".

You cant back date these sort of rulings as it may cause "hardship" for those that are unable to comply. That is why things like the ADR rulings are not backward facing as well. Youd get an absolute riot if you tried it, and how would engineers cope with the sudden influx of people trying to get there car re-complied. It wouldnt happen.

I think they should focus more on cars older than 20yrs old still using the stock factory suspension over cars that have been modified.
There are so many old unsafe cars on the road it's scary.
My wagon may 'look' like it's seen better days, but there is more things going on under the hood and chassis to keep that thing more glued to the ground than cement on dirt!
Morons with big pay cheques that need to justify their time!

i don't think the age of the car matters so much as the quality of the workmanship. the reason they want engineers certificates is so there is a line of resposability that is traceable back. even though the owner might be able to do modifications, there is no proof that they know how to do them. anyone can say "oh sure, i know how to do X" even if they never did it before.
there is more to lowering suspension than just cutting a coil.
in the end, it's all just a show for the media, they have to be "seen" to be doing something to lower the road toll weather or not it actually works is a whole other story.

Its all bullshit. If they were so concerned on safety they would make it so that you had to have safety inspections every yr, just like most countries in the world.
This is only so the politicians look as though they are actually doing something to combat "hooning", even though we all know it wont make a sh*t of a difference. They would have more success if they banned commodores

i think the reaction they are after is...'well if its about saving lives...' but as some have hinted, it could be about revenue and quotas given a state government that is in debt up to the wazoo...again as some have said, any sort of mod can be dangerous but it depends on the quality of parts in that mod and the workmanship behind it...i would definitely agree that if people have chopped their springs, then by all means, get them off the road but if they are genuinely designed suspension systems - springs/bags/coilovers - whatever, then i think due recognition should be given to the driver...they need to think their application through more i believe

Correct me if I'm wrong but they do say more then 5cm is allowed, it just has to be engineered. This prevents people just doing the dodgy, and if done correctly, the engineer will be happy with it and let it pass.

Just to clear this up a bit
If your car is lowered ...at all it will need an engineers certificate. If your car was modified before 31st of July you will still need a certificate if you have to go to to an auvis station for any reason. This would include having a defect cleared even if you modified your car prior to 1st of august. So in other words....your pre august 1st modified car is most likely legal if lowered less than 50 mm until you are defected ...rightly or wrongly and then have to present your car to an auvis station to have the defect cleared, when upon arrival at the auvis station you will be required to show your engineers certificate if the car has been lowered. If the vehicle is modified outside the guidelines of the rta document vsi 50 will not be eligible for unrestricted registration that guideline is 50 mm above or below standard
Well that's how I understand it at this stage....bad news huh!!!!!!

Actually, we already have that in NSW.
Doesn't mean Daley isn't a c*ck-head though.
