help: Exhausts

hi guys...
i have recently changed my exhaust to a 2.5inch system with a resonator, and a Cypher muffler.. the muffler was supposed to be the quietest out of the cypher industries range, but was disappointed because it was just to loud for me...
i am thinking of either fitting an extra resonator/s or buying a silencer...
i would like to know which is more effective in say cutting off half of the sound...
how much sound does a silencer cut off?? (for those who have one)...
thanks for any help...

A silencer will cut out around 7-10db depends on brand & style of the silencer. Its not half, but it would be much quieter then what ever you got now.

When it comes to sound, 6db = a doubling of loudness, so a reduction of 7-10db would reduce the loudness to around 1/2 - 1/3 of the original sound.
Based on what Kev said, some manufacturers might be over-stating the db decrease, as few people would know the 6db / doubling rule.

resonators will have the least effect on performance, however they will not reduce the sound by as much as a silencer.

right, thanks guys!!..
i'm just concerned that the manufacturer's silencer might not work?? judging from the fact that their "quietest" muffler wasnt what i expected

guess i just gotta hope it'll work....

I beg to differ.
I have a resonator put into my exhaust and it is a minimum 1/3 to a half the volume before it was put. I couldn't put in a silencer since i have a 5zigen fireball muffler (these things are loud!!!!). This was proven when i had to go over the pits. They even test it properly one rev and that was it.
I deffinetely reccomend a resonator. They only cost about 70 bux or so and they are done with in 30 mins.

i already have a resonator and a baffle for my muffler.
let me get this straight... I can get another resonator installed to make is more quiet? ie. have 2 resonators? will this affect the performance of the car?
Adriano.. nice car btw

thanks lal

still would prefer a mivec and a sunroof like yours though...
im sure you can get more than one resonator...

Yeah I'm pretty sure some cars have more than 1 resonator.
And a resonator definately does help in noise reduction.
I'm not sure how much it will affect performance, but for an NA engine, I expect it to be minimal compared to a turbo.

i have never used a resonator before but i have been told that performance wise, there will be no much difference... it is, at beast, negligable so don't worry too much about gas flow restriction. however its effect on noise reduction will not be as dramatic as silencers.
i suspect silencers on the other hand will work better than resonators in terms of reducing noise, but performance WILL suffer... well at least mine did anyway, not sure about the others out there.

hmmm, i asked around, rang the exhaust guy who did mine, quoted me $100 to fit a resonator that will apparently cut it down half the noise...
cypher industries silencer cost $85 + delivery so might end up $100...
i guess if there is a guarantee on the resonator might just get that instead.

Where's your current resonator put in?

from memory i think its close to the cat, about 300mm from it...

100.00 for a resonator installed is very cheap... too cheap in my books....

must be coz i got the exhaust done there as well... and yeah so far thats the cheapest quote i got... some quotes reached up to 210$...

is this true?? has anyone observed the same thing? if so, I may get rid of my baffle (this is the same as silencer right

) and get a second resonator instead... by doing that it should:
1. be as quiet, if not more quieter than when i had the baffle on
2. gain more power by taking the baffle off
adriano and I went to the same guy to do our exhaust.. he's a great guy and helpful.
where should the second resonator be fitted? just before the muffler?
