Hey guys, just wondering when you change name on the car, is there a minimum cost you need to pay or just the 2% or somethin of what you brought the car for?

Yes eddiii, it's called stamp duty.
Have a feeling it's about 2.5% or so. I think it was about $300 when I bought mine for $14,000 or thereabout.

would rta have the market value of the car price there? so they will charge you the market value if the amount is too low?

Its been a grey area for a long time. Just put a really low price in & if asked, tell 'em it had a blown head gasket. I've been saying that for years.

just be careful, when I brought my car over from Japan about 5 years ago, the lady asked me at VIC Roads what the market value of the car was, I said I paid 10 grand. She said, ok, but what do you think its worth? I stupidly replied, that I would hope to sell it for 16 grand or more. She did the stampy duty on 16 grand!!!! I ended up writing a letter to vicroads, and actually got a refund!
so, found out the value via redbook or drive or something and then go less then that, at the end of the day most of them dont have a clue on the value of the car. Or do what bennoz said and say there is mechanical damage.

so you just want to transfer car into your name to sell it for a friend???? what do you say when person asks how long you have owned the car for??
I dont think you need to bother, just say your friend has moved overseas or is away on holidays and your doing him a favour.. I dont think that's suss. I have sold a couple of cars for other people without issue...

yeah? ok then i probably just wont bother then, i was just thinking poeple mightbe like its not your car? kinda dodgy lol espicially how i look like too LOL and see my FTO there, a camry, a celica there lol ^^ thanks for your help though, from your experience, should i get my friend to sign all the papers first? so i can sell it whenever?

yeah, I mean I cant see the issue, the car is the same, and the price is still going to be determined on its condition, servicing reports etc etc, not what the owner looks like.... like I said, you can use lots of reasons, a) he is away on holidays, b) he works on weekends, c) you know more about the car etc etc.... if you do the sale, you can get the paper work done prior... if the buyer really wants to meet the original owner - I am sure this could be done??
