Convince Parents To Buy an FTO

After weeks or procrastinating I need some reasons to convince my parents to put in half the money for an FTO.
Here's the current situation:
I am close to buying an FTO, most likely Stunna-FTO's white one. However the last minute my parents are trying to convince me to buy another car because of the "spoiler" (which isn't even that bad) and its too "asian" (ok..) which they ALWAYS pull out the last minute when I am excited over something, kinda annoying.
I have told them how this car will last me until I am off my P's and if I get some crappy box I will get frustrated over it and have to spend heaps of money on it anyway to get it repaired. And how the car is also safe with ABS, airbags etc.
Another issue is insurance. I have done some comparisons and if I get the FTO insured completely under my name it will be over $3100 (nearly half the value of the car) + $1000 excess. A 2000 Lancer will cost $2800 under my name + $1000 excess, so I don't know how the FTO makes a difference in terms of insurance costs, it's very similar to a "standard" car.
In the end I cannot justify paying nearly half the value of the car for stupid insurance, the only thing I'm worried about is the driver I hit not my car. (By the way, is there any insurance that only covers the driver you hit?)
What points can I make to my parents to convince them to let me get an FTO?
cheers

If you get your parents to pay for half, then who is going to pay the extra 1/3 for insurance?
If you've got a job, then just look at getting a loan & cutting your parents out of the equation altogether..
I don't buy into all that crap about buying a heap of junk as your first car so you can "get experience" .. I got an FTO as my first car & as my 2nd car.. & I wouldn't do it any differently if I could go back & do it again..
There's no way I would let my kids (when I have them) buy a common bogan car as their first car..

Where the hell are you getting that insurance quote for the Lancer? I had a white 2000 model 4door lancer as my first car and it was $650 comprehensive?

RACV, who else do you suggest?
(not up to date with the current insurers)

NOT RACV!! you can just get third party which will be cheaper and covers the other party involved but not you...
in melbourne best companies I have tried are unique car insurance (i think they are called something else now), shannons and just cars..... but just pick up the phone and call them all ...

Just car is quoting me $1800 + $1600 excess, does that seem reasonable?
By the way, how does the whole excess thing work?
cheers

Don't get it as a first. Huge insurance costs if you want comprehensive which will keep your parents happy.

FTO GPX is my second car.
But trust me on this don't worry about getting something awesome to start off with. Get some heap of junk, something so terribly bad that you can thrash it, beat it, mistreat it. Then that RoflBox will teach you how to really look after a car.
My first car (an old Mitsubishi Colt) died and it was my fault.
Unless you are completely confident don't get an FTO, and if you do, make it a GR or something so that GPX is still there when it dies lol.

my opinion is if your parents say that you must get comprehensive insurance then i wouldn't get an FTO as you said it yourself, you will be paying half the value of your car as a yearly premium. With the value of our cars today, sadly it isn't even worth it
if however comprehensive insurance is not a priority for you then by all means get one. An FTO is a damn great car to start out on, i bought mine last year while on my L's and it was the best choice i ever made
i vote get one, goodluck

Not really a priority, to be honest I care more about the driver I hit then mine car, so that will only set me back $350.
If I get the new job that pays well I will proberly get comprehensive, all depends what happens in the next week

Your parents are so funny on the "asian" thing. Do they have any idea where FTO is made from? Japan....from Asia.

I say you go for it. Stunna's car looks pretty solid/good/clean.
As for insurance, just get 3rd party to be honest. Comprehensive wouldn't be worth it if you're such a young driver (unless your parents let them put it under their name). 3rd party will cover your ass if you hit a beamer or merc, just dont drive recklessly and you should be fine.
I was in your position about a month ago, was really tossing up between a FTO and the usual "first car" civic EK. Long story short, took out a small loan (if you're doing tertiary studies check out NAB student loans - so so so good) and flew up to Sydney. Bought Charlie's GPvR and haven't regretted it since. Such a nicer car than a lancer or EK, turns heads and has good performance for a NA.
Good luck
