Help on a decent choice!

Hi all.
Time has come, need new tyres, only need 2 really, but no point wearing odd bods.
The rims I was looking at were Lenso (Tenzo) Type M 17x7"
http://www.tempetyres.com.au/content/pr ... type-m.JPG
Price per rim is $200 and then I'd have to get some decent tyres, mid range.. dunno what, package tyres there offering are junk, some malaysian brand, and then kumho ku23.
Or
I could spend $1000, and get some Pirelli P Zero Nero 205x55 16s and use my existing rims.
My rims (factory 16s) are a bit worn, gutter rash, nice dent in the ring on one (doesnt affect the wheel though)
So yeah, kinda on a toss up whether I get awesome tyres and keep the factory rims,
or
get some new rims to improve the look, but only have tyres that will do the job.
What would you do.

mate it really comes down to what you do
the p-zero are good tyre but there is better at a less cost, it depends on how you drive....
do you race everywhere, treat each light like a drag strip and attack some windey roads every week? then they are for you.
or do you want to make your FTO different and are just a normal round town driver? then maybe the whole package with rims may be better.
or lastley you may like the stockies dont want to stand out (too much, cos bit hard with FTO anyway

) but dont race everywhere so a cheaper longer lasting tyre might suit best

hey vip.
Show and go, are both on my list.
The car will be getting sprayed if not by the end of this year, then early next year, and it won't be an inconspicuous paint job, so the rims would help with the overall look.
However I am concerned with good grip, good quality and also good value for money, so getting any old tyre that will do the job, isn't on my list of likes.
I am unsure on these Kumho ku23, and neither kumho site has any specs.
The pirelli however are already on the car, just old now, and are amazing for when I do drive the car.
It's much of a much.
If the Kumhos are said to be decent enough, then I suppose I can do so, but they're not choice #1 if you get me.

OK the good kuhmo's are KU31's or 712's if you can get them but price will be more. So maybe you should get rims and ask how much it will be to upgrade the rubber...... If you cant afford decent rubber now then at least you will have rims and be able to change at later date. Throwing on good tyres for rims you want to change is just a waste of $ IMO
one option that comes reccomended by lots of people here and others i know are the maxxis brand tyre, while cheaper they are very adequete and will do you a good job in wear grip etc until your ready or able to then put on the top shelf rubber

Yeah, I have KU31 on my sedan that I bought cheap chrome rims for, package cost 1K.
Meanwhile, on a far more powerful car, they wanna put cheaper rubber on. wtf???
I could get maxxis brand through my friend at BJs for a bit cheaper.
MA-V1's be the way to go I take it?!

agree with everything VIP has said. Trust me if you get your car painted stock rims are just gonna look sh*t.
I was reading a motor magazine and maxxis came in second overall. They did sh*t loads of tests but im not sure which maxxis they were.
I need new tyres immediately so i am thinking maxxis as i run a lot of neg camber and just cant afford to by the best tyre when im replacing them so often.
ill get a pic up of tyres tomorrow for you..... its shocking

Tires ay...?? Yep i echo what i8afre said (did i spell that right o.0).
Go for Maxxis...specifically the new Maxxis i-Victra Pro. They've recently been tested in Motor magazine and they performned damn well...plus are quite cheap compared to some other brands. In fact, these tires clocked a faster lap time on the new clio sport driven by Luffy than a set of bridgestone adrenalines (however, the adrenalins won the test comparo due to supreme consistency across all tests). So yeah, BFYB...doesn't really get better than this.
The most important thing, is to make sure the tire you get is balanced to the rest of your car, in particular the suspension and chassis stiffness. You don't want to over-tire your car.
Tbh...i'm thinking of getting a set of these when my semis wear out.. i'm tired of having to warm tires up before having fun etc. I'm going by merit of lap times hehe.
Else if you think these will give too much grip for your setup, there are also Maxxis MA-Z1 which are also really good and then the MA-V1 which is still a decent sport tire. My dad's supercharged corolla with a weird sussy setup runs the MA-V1s and is well suited to the corolla's setup.

Been reading up on the Maxxis, and yeah, they do seem to be a rather well received tyre, and good overall market price
Thik I'll be going for the Z1 as they have the rim protector which will be needed since the fiance seems to like gutters
Have to wait for monday to find out how much I can get them for.
Dont really want to go over the 140/tyre amount, so fingers crossed.

Over tyre?? What do mean mate?
I have been using (I HATE TO SAY IT) nankang's but thats only cause i didnt have a job when i brought my rims and they were the cheapest tyres i could get

They actually werent too bad in the dry, i have definitly driven on worse. But f*(ken disgusting in the rain.
Ok here's my setup, guide me oh wise ones
Turbo FTo
Tyres size 225/35/18 thinking about going 235 on the back
Coilovers
dampner set to hardest setting
Spring rate is around 5.5
Will be running around -2 degrees camber
I drive "spiritedly" especially round corners pretty much all the time.
So what do i choose? Im thinking maxxis but which one's? as stated before becuase i of the camber i dont really want to be paying a lot?

When I turbo'd the Sonata, the best tyres I found were Pirrelli ... I know they are a liitl more, but God damn they were great tyres... Those tyres, plus the coil overs gave me great grip for a turbo FWD ...
I have the same tyres on the Lancer now, and am going to hate replacing them due to AWD ... lol ...

By over-tire, i meant putting a tire on that provides massive mechanical grip that a car can't handle. For example, my dad's corolla is a locally delivered ae101 hatchback with a JDM engine transplant...far poor in terms of chassis stiffness and suspension options.. so for that setup, my dad has religiously avoided semi slicks even though it would provide a good grip bonus on take off etc... simply because the chassis has too much flex and the sussy isn't something that can handle the grip provided by semis...the car will body roll and lean too much before the tires gave way, giving crap handling feel, muddy chassis feedback and bad handling behaviour on the limit as the tires let go when the outside of the car is compressed too much. Basically, chassis + Tires (mech grip provided) + Sussy wasn't matched.
Same with my MPS 3 when i had it...i kept the stock sussy at first and put on semis slicks...then eventually had to upgrade to coilovers and a rear sway bar to balance it out.
Also depending on your application (street only etc), having too much grip can also detract from driving enjoyment. E.g. If you make your car handle insane and have tonnes of grip, but you street it only, you're never gonna feel near limit feedback etc (which is where a lot of enjoyment comes from hehe).. Just like at some EVO owners (a car that handles brilliantly as we all know) and you'll find some say while it's fun blasting down some twisties at warp speed...there's no sense of involvment sometimes and it can feel a bit bland.
Of course this is all personal preference at day's end but it's something that if done right will make your ride probably a whole lot more fun for you to drive and potentially safer if you're on limit (having a car that responds well instead of all mucky etc).

not a bad setup simon just run a little toe on the front or will be bitch to hold onto and those tyres will be destroyed in no time.
Maybe you will be wanting something just a little better than maxxis for yourself though as grip will be your greatest tissue? esp seeing as drive like me
No matter which tyre you use you will alwys wear the fronts rather quick compared to a standard FTO (non turbo) setup
so if it was me i'd keep tyres same size front and rear to allow for constant rotation and maybe go for a asymetrical tyre so can also rotate left to right more often without the need to flip tyres on rims as frequently.

I got a set of the same tyres Ben got a while back & I can't fault them ..
Ben might be able to give you a better idea if he's been out on the track with them though..
They were the Federal 595's -
http://www.federaltyres.com/ss595
From memory, the other comparable tyre in the similar price bracket were the Toyo Proxes4 -
http://www.toyo.com.au/Proxes%204.htm
I can't comment on how good they are to drive on, but the reviews were all good.
Tyres are the one thing you don't want to be cheap with though .. the only thing between the car & the ground is 4 bits of rubber .. you don't want to f*(k with that..
I was driving on Nankangs (NSII) for probably about a year (they came with my rims) & they are the SCARIEST tyres EVER in the wet.. there were a couple of times that I'm surprised I didn't write myself off .. dry performance was alright though until they got too worn then I was sliding instead of turning around corners .. drifting around roundabouts was hella fun though

Fedral 595s are awesome, sticky when needed & when you over extend yourself, you can control the slide. Were $200 a corner (mind you thats in 18s, would be cheaper in 17's or 16's.)

lol smartass .. gotta explain these things for you noobs you know..
anyways .. found these on an old thread
Mr-Charisma wrote:Checked out some reviews on the Federal SS595's & ordered a set this arvo for $142/corner .. they seem like a pretty decent tyre & from comments I've read & people I've talked to say that they're near impossible to break traction with even if you try.. the only negative thing I heard was from a place that doesn't stock them saying that Hankooks are better quality ..
