Are exhausts a no-no on autos?

To be honest Im not sure, but have been told it by a few people. Would fitting a bigger exhaust to a auto/tip sound stupid or still be OK? Kind of on the topic, exhaust and pod/air filter Ive also been told is a decent cheap upgrade, true or false?

Any upgrade from a factory exhaust to a free flowing exhaust is a good thing regardless of transmission type. Dont bugger around with bigger tips, that achieves nothing more than noise, up the total exhaust size from 2.25 inch to 2.5 inch with a high flow cat / resonator / muffler to get performance results.

At the end of the day, the engine is just a pump, if you let it breathe more efficiently (inwards with pod filter & intake pipe, exhausting with a free flowing exhaust) then your are going to get better performance from it.

And bang for buck, its one of the cheapest dollar per kilowatts gains you can do.

^^^^ totally agree.

As for the sound, if you had of asked me 10yrs ago i would have said DONT DO IT. But then i had never driven a fto. The fto sounds wicked and the reason why is it has a fast kick down (change of gear).

CVT with exhausts drone abit, you can ask the new Lancer owners.
But FTO's regardless of transmission as said above, sound awesome!
a good upgrade as well is a set of extractors.. really opens it up.

yeah just got mine done recently, got the 2.5, hi flow cat, mandrel bent, performance muffler etc, sounds really good, i have noticed a slight gain in performance expecially when mivec kicks in, seems to flow better high end, what sort of power gains would u expect from this ??

My other main concern I guess is the droning. A mates Prelude is annoying to be in on the highway, way to loud and a bit of vibration. Im looking at something I can sit in the car comfortably with for usual driving but giving the car a more grunty sound. Im fine with it at higher revs being loud as we dont all constantly drive mental all the time.

I know we are in different countries but the price I wouldnt expect to be to different so whats a kind of estimate that this upgrade will cost? Thanks for the help so far, good knowledge for people like me!

If you after power do what Ben said and change the whole thing. If you just want a big of grunt then buy a new muffler. Shouldn't cost too much and should give you a bit of noise to be happy with.

mine was done over there mate, had cannon, mandrel bent 2.5 pipe and de-cated (which i reccomend you do as its still not illegal there) , had virtually no drone it only roared when foot was down and revs climbed
just make sure you keep good resonator and yes mine's tip :D

^^^^ agreed,

The resonator caused real bad droning on mine. But I changed all my exhasut when i did the turbo and now there is absolutly no droning

I couldn't be arsed going back & re-reading through your thread.. but did you actually weld together your own 3" exhaust from scratch when you did your turbo?

:D Yep 3inch mandrel bent in stainless and all done only 500mm of the ground...........................IT WAS A F&*KING WANK of a job. But looks sweet, sounds even better and cant believe the cost that exhaust places charge to do it. They are making a killing

how much did it cost for you to do it yourself?

$200 for piping
$190 for the cat
$180 for resonator
about $70 i think for the flexi joint but cant remember have to look at the reciepts
$80 for flanges

So yeah about $700 which is way under half for what i was quoted. I think from memory chelsea paid $1500 for her's and that was only 2.5inch pipe cat back 8O

In stainless steel or mild? If its in stainless thats a bloody god price i have never heard of anyone getting that cheap before.

Performance gains around 10kw....give or take

naah lol only mild steel for the piping lol, yeah i would of guessed about that much seems to come in to effect when mivec is kickin in and higher revs, seems to flow much better :D

and that power gain is that at the flywheel ?
