as above... just dropped in at home to get a torch and some other stuff, thought id c if anyone has any idea what just happened
ok so, i was driving just a few streets from from home, i wouldn't say the car was warm but is wasn't cold. i turned a corner and as i went to accelerate away (1st gear) there was a bang like someone smacking a metal garage door or something... then the sound kinda carried on like a a garage door being shaken or like something was dragging under the car. So i pulled over and the battery light went on and the car instantly died
i checked over the car and nothing seems to have come off. Car wont start
any ideas on whats happened or what i can do?

If the battery light came on just before all this happened, you can bet it has something to do with the battery, or something connected to the battery that just drained it.

Could be a million different things. Altenator would be the first place id check from the little info you have provided

Does the car crank when you try and start it? If it cranks, could very well be an internal engine issue. Could be anything really?
Maybe you snapped a timing belt followed by a conrod? Valve could have dropped into your cylinder after losing your timing belt?

ok... sorry guys ive been out half the night trying to get it running.
I dont think its the battery. Even though the light is on and all that, when i hooked it up to a booster pack(dont no what else to call it) nothing changed.
Alternater- dont no about that... the car had about 3 hours of running time 2day and was running smoothly until it died. What king of effect would the alternater dieing have on the car while it was running and would it just blow like that (in a bit of a bang) or is it the sort of thing that the car runs sh*t for a while up until it slowly gives out?
Yes the car cranks, in fact when i turn it over it sounds really healthy, the only thing out of place is the engine not fireing up... so that would seem to rule out values dropping into cylinders and the timing belt snapping (btw all the other belts are all there). If any of that had happened it would sound terrible trying the turn over right? Not to mention do more damage.
Other than all that i thought maybe the fuel could be a suspect... either somethings playing up with the spark or generally fuel not getting to the engine. However, all the fuel lines i could get too seemed intact and there was no leaks under the car and no smell of fuel. In saying that is there anything else that can go wrong with the fuel? Like the computer or the lines loosing pressure or something.
One last thing... is there a fuse that could have blown that could be causing all of this?

$50 says the alternator belt has let go. In fact, I'd bet my first born on it. A $20 belt to replace, part number 4PK940 from any auto shop.

Thanx for all the help guys... ive been at the mechanics all morning and the problems been found; the wiring to the crack sensor or something (cant remember what he called it) has come loose and gotten caught in the alternater belt. the alternater belt is still all there its just not very healthy now, so i'll need a new one and a new sensor (ripped the sh*t out of it)
apparently thats one of the best case scenarios for a loud bang right before a car breaks down

lol yeah thats got to be worth more then $50
Yeah through me off a bit cos i could see last night that the alternater belt was still there, but couldn't tell that it was a bit chewed up in the dark... missed the broken cable running under the car as well
guy reackons he has sourced the parts, so it will be interesting to c what he charges me... i think he hasen't worked on an fto before, because when i left he wasn't sure how much trouble he'd have getting the parts. Id say hes goin to get them from mitsu or something... change me through the arse

He's got the order wrong, its the belt that would have let go first & torn the wiring to the sensor on its way out

Common problem.
You might find he charges you a few bucks to swap out the crank angle sensor, as it buried under some timing cover plates & behind the harmonic balance. I'd expect a few hunder including parts.
Get him to swap the power steering / air con belt as well while your at it. They are usually changed in pairs & one letting go, is a good indication the other one is on its way out too.

yup this happened to me 10 days after buying my fto the p/s belt frayed after some spirited driving and sounded like rocks hitting a tin shed.. after driving it to my mate to have a look at it halfway there the car shut down around a corner, cut a sensor too, thought it'd been destroyed or something aye.
