After coming home from work yesterday afternoon I decided to change the rear spark plugs as I had changed the front three a couple of weeks prior and hadnt got around to doing the rest. When I took the plug out from the middle cylinder, to my surprise it was covered in oil

Oh S#!T was the first thing I said, and very loudly too when I saw this.
Well im no expert when it comes to engines but my first though was a F@#^*D piston ring. Anybody else got any ideas?

Not your piston ring mate.....its the gasket/seal around the middle rear spark plug....16bux from Mitsubishi for a new seal

Whats this gasket/seal? I have never seen a gasket or seal on a spark plug apart from the steel washers on the plugs when you buy them.
The oil was on the electrode side of the plug if this helps. And a fair bit of it too.
Also noticed for a little while the car would have a slight backfire every now and again when I back off on the throttle at high revs. This is why I changed plugs. Could this be from oil inside the cylinder instead?

It'd be the seal. Oil comes from within the rocker cover. You'll need to pull it off to replace the seal, there's one for each plug.

Oh ok. That makes more sense now I understand where the gasket is. Cheers.
Will I need a new gasket for the tappet cover when I remove it or is ok to reuse the old one. Im guessing prob not.
