just been having problems with my 97 gpx 5sped tips, transmission guy opened the box and check it found problem was in plantation gears, got the part and we though it was fixed howeverim still havin problems in regards 1st gear slips effecitely into neutral mode and i need to apply revs to get back into 1st gear and it jolts uncomfortably. rang the trans guy he wants to run a diagnostic check but is unsure wether the diag will work on the 5spd tip, or only the older 4spd box, does anyone know either way???

cheers

Dont know if it is for both but it wont it as it is the same to find the engine codes. Should he not have checked the error codes before beginning any work

Sorry what i meant to say was "Dont know if it is the same method to extract the codes for a 5spd as it is for a 4spd, however just try it as it wont hurt the vehicle as it is the same to find the engine codes. Shouldnt he have checked the codes before he started replacing stuff

arrgh went to drive it this afternoon is gettin really bad,was drivin in 3rd and then the neutral light started flashing, is strugglin to get into gears whens its cold but once if warms up , its ok really puzzling me and frustrating the tranmission guy has already had the box open and the box is ok, so the problem has to be inbetween the gearstick and the box, rang trans guy taking it in tommorow, so over this arrrgh any ideas what it could be ??

this is how you check the codes but instead of looking at the engine light you look at the "N" light

I recently had issues with my tip box going into neutral mode, it would happen usually when cold but after a bit would happen a lot. Eventually I did the following:

I used the diagnosis procedure - however I have the EvoScan software and cable which makes things a bit easier. It said Input Speed sensor.

Becuase it was the weekend, I decided to change the oil to help with the issue. Went down to some joint and grabbed some of the only SP3 rated oil on the shelf, think it was Valvoline - only use this type of oil. flushed out about 5l of oil and re-filled. Drove around and was better, however over the next few days it happened agian - not nearly as much.

Took it to my transmission place. He said the input sensor was shot we bought a input and output sensor while we were at it - it only cost about $250.

Did I proper oil flush cos they have the proper flush machine. A bit of a service, 2 days and a look around, $400 later its good as new.

Hope this helps as it seems to be a common issue as these boxes get older.

Hey KJ, I tried to get error codes out of Evoscan the other day & it wouldnt tell me anything. The manual check found 3 codes, but nothing on Evoscan - how did you cable it? Did you manually earth that little pin/wire that hangs out of the diagnositic end of the Evoscan cable?

hey Ben.

When you plug the cable in (without being connected to the PC) it shoulod automatically go into diagnostic mode on the dash...you can then count the flashes as per normal thats normally what i do cos I cant be arsed to start up the pc. Takes about 1min to suss everything out.

I have got the codes from the software but i forget how I did it, but its wasnt obvious.

I used the sofware to clear the codes though when there is an issue to make sure its not a legacy issue.

yeah cheers, took it back to the transmission place, guy though it could be a very small bit of metal blocking somewhere in the valve body, so he took it off cleaned it and swapped soleniods around and now runs smooth as, he ran diagnositics but apparently the 4spd software is all that is available so it could only diagnoses up to 4 spd, and that showed everything ok, so stoked, the replacement of the part in the planitary gears cost $1200 covered by a warranty  , and then when it still wasnt quite rite i took it back he spent about a week testing and playing around with it to get it right, didnt charge a cent for that,

i had a good chat to him, cos at first i was concerend it was the torque converter, he said no chance, when that goes the car will not move out of neutral. ouch lol

humm this sounds exacly like my problem. to a tee.

my box was making a rattleing noise not so much when cold, but badly when warm along with a whining noise louder as rmp's higher.
swapped the fluid about 4.5 ish l
working great for a day, and now the problem is back was driving down the road, and the n started flashing.. and i have no gears.. it would just rev. stopped the car.. waited 5 mins and shes going again. maybe i dont need a new box :S
