I went to buy an FTO tonight, everything was fine ,except the electrical system...

The battery/charge warning light was lit the whole time except when higher up in the rev range. when a large power draw, like high beam headlights were on, the car nearly stalled at idle, and the voltimeter was reading the min. 8V - probaby less

Im guessing that a new battery, regulator and alternator will fix these problems!?!?!

also the climate control didnt know what to do so the air got hotter when high beams were on, all the dash/interior lights were dull and got worse with high beams. even to the stage where the odometer and climate control screen went blank and the tacho wouldnt read!!!...

also the gear changes while in 'drive' were a bit too late to change, when in tiptronic mode, all worked fine. its almost like that in auto 'D' it was confused when to change.

Hopefully, all of these problems are because of the very low power that the car is getting/producing

PLEASE HELP ME!?

I want to buy it ASAP, what do you guys think it would be, would it be as simple as a new alternator regulator and battery??? Can anyone recommend anything that i could do to make sure it is fixable before i buy it????

Thanks very much in advance

-Adrian

it does sounds like either alternator or battery cause most of the problems, except for the climate control issue.

If its the battery, then its cheap and easy to change. On the other hand the alternator is very costly to replace around $800 from Mitsubishi, $450 for second hand, unless u going re-con it then it should be around $250. Don't forget none of these prices are including labour.

Anyway the car sounds dodgy to me, why would someone trying to sell the car without fixing all these problem anyway????

Im in love with this FTO because everything else is perfect, and now -after looking at it , i realise why the asking price is soooo low - at $15000 for a 1995 GPX (yes i have checked the compliance plates and chassis codes)

If i can get this fixed for a relatively low cost - say under $2000 - i can afford to do it, but i run a huge risk if there is more problems than that.

From my understanding of the problem, everything is playing up because it is all controlled electronically, and if the alternator and regulator are stuffed, obviously it is going to affect the whole car -including climate control, headlights, tacho , interior lights, automatic drive, etc etc

Thanks heaps for all your help, I'll see what i can do , and let you all know how i go... i want to get it by the end of the week- providing it is fixable

Thans again
