hi all im headed to sydney on wednesday to check out a 1996 FTO GPX
http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/MITSU ... 69042&pt=1
Wanna know the little problems that i might find with this FTO,
firstly they aren't sure if its an early 96 or late so i dunno if its a gen 2 i thinks its a 1..
manual :)
What i really wanna know is what an where i should be looking for faults on the fto not just the usual things on any car. What common engine problems will be the case with the v6 mivec?
Any help would be great, hope to be a proud new fto owner by the end of wednesday!!!
thanks in advance

There is a what to look for when buying sticky thread here somewhere I think, so have a good look at that as itll go into a lot more details than ive covered below.

Check for rust bubbles in the roof (they usually occur as a strip parallel to the front and rear windscreen.

Check the foglight switch

Check for oil leaks underneath the engine

check for unusual noises coming from suspension when driving over a bumpy road.

Make sure none of the shocks are leaking

Check to make sure the gaps in all the panels line up and are about the same (if they are not, the car has most probably been in an accident.

check the aircon works

Thats enough for starters

also get there befor they warm it up so you can see how it starts cold, see how the tappets sounds and so on. this can be fixed but it is somthing that you can bargan them with.

hmm that might b a bit of a problem given he's picking me up at the airport :(
But i guess if we stopped somewhere for like 30mins after or whatever it'd be kinda cold yeah?

It would be cooler then when it was running however wouldn't be a cold start. Mine sits for at least 1 hour and a half before it even gets to the C symbol.

Check colour of exhaust gases and do what ever it takes to see the car on cold start up. DONT drive with radio on.
